After a lengthy wait, the refinishing on a very early Colt's 1911 commercial model is finished, so along with a friend I'm driving up to Crystal River Florida to pick it up. I'm really excited the old pistol is finally done...
Anyway, picking up a senior citizen 1911 made me think it would be a good time to carry a plain old 1911... it is in fact 105 years old now... SOOooo... today I am carrying a 1932 vintage 1911A1 commercial made for the Argentine Army by Colt's... It is a rather plain gun, but it still shoots well and is reliable...
So,I guess you could call today a retro day... or can I? With the 1911 still in productions is an A1 retro? Questions, questions...

Right now I'm carrying this forged-frame MKIII in a Summer Special IWB holster made for a 1911:

I bought a G19 for cold weather carry but to tell the truth, it sees limited duty. Most days I reach for the M36 or M48. Those little snubbies are just too convenient to overlook.

Went way out of character today and actually carried a Glock 43!!! Ok, ok, I don't expect it to be a regular thing. I got it for my daughter and I've been experimenting with different ammo and carry modes before I give it to her. Got it used......WITH A SHINY CHROMED SLIDE!!! Still with the CZ82 and KT P32. Painted the top of the G43 slide flat black, but I can't quite give up the 12 rounf capacity of the CZ.

Today I'm carrying an FEG Counterfeit FN. It came in with a bunch from Israel, and was re-parkerized by the Israelis (I presume), who really did an excellent job with the refinish. It's all matching numbers, and was apparently put into storage after the refinish, as there's absolutely no evidence that the pistol was ever fired afterwards. No pitting evidenced beneath the refinish, and only one little ding on the bottom of the recoil spring tunnel.
It came with a really nasty set of rubber Pachmayr finger groove grips, and the right grip panel would pull off of the grip screw every time you racked the slide. No problem, though, as I had a set of black plastic FN military grips waiting to find a new home on a pistol.
Functions OK so far, but I haven't fired it much - been too cold to go to my outdoor range, as I'm retired and can pick my weather! Supposed to go to 52F tomorrow, so I'm planning a trip then. I did replace the extractor spring, and somewhere I have a new Wolf recoil spring ready to go in if I ever find the stupid thing! I also took out the firing pin and spring, and found that the firing pin channel, firing pin spring, and the firing pin itself was pretty rusty. Cleaned them up best I could and reinstalled, and next Social Security check I'll order up a new firing pin and spring!
I'd love to know where this pistol has been and what it has seen, though.

After talking about 357MAG revolvers on another board, I decided to be a bit retro today... I am carrying a Smith & Wesson model 65 with 3" barrel in one of Ryan Grizzle's very nice custom holsters. This one gets carried some and the wood grips are starting to show some wear... I probably need to slop some boiled linseed oil on them... This M65 is one I picked up a while back as a residual on a trade for a collector grad 38/44 Heavy Duty S&W. The nice thing about the M65 is it can shoot the 38/44 Special ammo yet is a good bit smaller than the Heavy Duty which is only marginally smaller than a 1955 Buick... I really like the 3" barrel M65 (and the blue M13 version as well) for carry... they are easily concealed and still boast a powerful round that will do well at protecting me and my family if (God forbid) it should be necessary. I am a real big fan of the S&W revolvers with a 3in. barrel. I own a S&W 696 with the 3in. barrel and it is one of my favorite handguns. I enjoy the big bore handguns.

I have a 3" 65 and always have it around; though it is only carried on trips into the bush. But it does stay loaded and ready at my night table. As a cop I carried everything from an M10 S&W to a .45 Colt Gov, Model. Now, when I carry concealed which is not often, it's usually a Walther PPK or PPK/S or the Kimber Ultra Cary .45.

The 3913 is a really great pistol... I never understood why S&W didn't advertise it... V/r Chuck

Still open-carrying my CZ82 for work at the gunshop, but I've lately fallen madly in love with my "new" IDF surplus Sig P228. Just got in 2 different lefty paddle holsters for it (a SERPA and a FOBUS),and I think it will be my new store carry gun.
PS - I still can't get used to the ugly "Egg Head Me" just to the left. Scary! <-----<<
OK, this is much better. It's me with a prototype Israeli Tavor. I didn't like it then...I don't like it now.

There is certainly nothing to complain about with a SIG228... a very reliable gun, though it seems to be to be a bit on the large side for carry... of course I also carry a S&W model 28 at times... so I should not have much to say about something being big!!! Today I'm in a traditional mood... so a 45ACP seems to be in order... One of my favorite 1911 pistols is my S&W Commander size scandium frame example... This is the only 1911 I have that I feel comfortable carrying as it came from the box... trigger is a tad heavier than I like at about five pounds but other than that is is a fine pistol... accurate and drop dead reliable... I'd prefer a shorter 1911A1 type trigger, but this one is pretty good... one of these days I guess I'll get around to changing it out... but otherwise I can't think of much I would change from it's out of the box configuration... Oh wait... I also replaced the flat main spring housing with an arched version... makes 1911s shoot to point of aim for me... When I carry a 1911 type I like to use this holster... made by a custom maker who used to be in Dallas... In the late 1990s and early 2000s he sold his work at the Dallas Market Hall gun shows... all of a sudden he quit coming to the shows... I don't know what happened to him... but one vendor told me the guy was 'back' in prison again... True? Don't know... but I sure missed having a source of holsters... Anyway, that is today's carry... all the advantages of a 1911 with a ultra light weight scandium frame... V/r Chuck

Nice Commander, Chuck. Interesting story about the holster, too.
