My HP has a 4 digit serial number that was applied AFTER manufacture. I believe the gun was made before 68 and imported after. The numbers were stamped over the original finish. So I am wondering where to send pics to get a ballpark on age?

Thanks again, PMG.

Hello Today I was at my gun-dealer and I saw a wounderful Pistol! I fell in love and bought it immediately. Now I am sitting here with my gun on my PC and try to find more about this piece.
It is a Browning HP - 9mm Luger, Wooden Grips, Condition LikeNew with polished Bark Black glossy finish and fixed sights.
Left Side of the Slide engraved: BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH & MONTRAL P.Q. Right Side of the Slide: MADE IN BELGIUM / ASSEMBLED IN PORTUGAL
The Serial No is: 245PP5605x
Can somebody tell me more about this Gun? Manufacturing date, Variant, Governement or civile model etc....
Thanks for your help...
Greetings from Switzerland

The 245 PP was made in 1988.
Though the three digit theoretically tells you a gun was made for commercial sale or government contract in practice this is not reliable because FN would use on hand commercial guns for contract orders.
I'm not sure what "bark black" finish is, but I am assuming it is a semi matt spray on. This is probably FN's 'Epoxy' which on my guns at least has proved to be a very durable finish... I like it a lot.
An HP in the European market would be expected to have FN markings rather than Browning, but Browning market HPs do turn up in Europe fairly regularly. Browning markings are normally sold in the North American market. The FN and Browning guns are made in the same factories and there are no differences other than markings.
You have gotten yourself a very fine pistol that should last longer than most of us will live.
The trigger mounted magazine interlock is removed in many HP pistols to improve trigger pull and in many instances simply because the interlock is not liked by a lot of people. When the Germans occupied Belgium and had HPs produced for their use they deleted the interlock from production.
Hope that helps
Chuck

Hi Larry,
Date of mfg with only a serial number is virtually impossible for your High Power. If you can supply fairly detailed photos of various marking of both sides of your pistol, as well as general photos, there are members here who can help you.
I have one made in 1960 in the 28,000 range and another made in 1943 in the 25,000 range. Fabrique Nationale reused serial numbers multiple times and did not keep reliable records. Up until the mid '60s there were usually marks indicating the inspector (controller of proof) and other things in obscure places. Being able to examine these marks can sometimes help in determining a year of mfg.
I look forward to seeing your photos!

Larry,
I always forget how difficult it is to upload photos on this forum. If you'd like, you could email some photos to me and I could take a look and give you my best guess.

Thanks! Tim
