Somewhere in this forum, I posted photos of serrations depicting the difference between the levels of serration crests against the external wall surface of the slide. Days later, I became curious if there are other variations during the manufacturing process as to these serrations e.g. how many are there supposed to be (from the tool room / prototype, trial, pre-war, German occupation and up to present). So I got into my files again, visited some forums, and selected photo samples (as always, credits go to the photo owners especially on those possible photobucket photos from internet sites I can no longer identify). Indeed there were variations (and some odd features) that existed along the line. The photos also included variations of the sear lever hole position on each side as available. Note: If I have erred on some ID of the pistols here or information as to my counting of the number serrations or position of the sear holes, please let me know so I can take note of it. Tool Room / Prototype / Pre-1935 Tool room samples with 18 serrations (screen shot and photos from www.gunsandammo.com/tv/browning-hi-power-pistol & www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/01/30/tfb-field-trip-john-m-browning-firearms-museum/). Pre-1935 with 22 serrations (same source as the tool room samples).

Outstanding thread, pjk9hp. Your thoroughness simply cannot be surpassed.
By the way, that American Rifleman history of the Hi-Power is the best that I have ever read.

That is an excellent compilation, thank you.
I suspect that the reason there is variation is that the number of serrations is not fixed, but the length of the area, along with the depth, angle, spacing, etc., into which the serrations are machined is specified in the engineering drawings as would be the normal manufacturing procedure.
