Hi all,
I kinda keep going back to Hi Powers as the quintessential 9mm. But for no other reason than recreational pleasure, I'd like to try something new.
This would be just for fun: range use, plinking, etc.
Things I've already tried: Full size CZ's. Love 'em, just a tad heavy for 9mm for a full day for me. Sig classic line-I think they are solid guns, they don't fit me well, so it takes sone extra work to shoot them well. Glock/XD/FNX/M&P... ya, I get their appeal, I get that they can be tuned well, just not into striker guns for fun.
Things I've been thinking about: CZ 75 compact, a 92/M9 variant, lightweight 1911 9mm. Not adverse to HK's or Sig Pro series, just don't know that much about them.
I'm in no rush, and like to buy used, so I thought it would be fun to see what other HP fans enjoy.
Thanks
ETA: Ok, spent a while looking at and shooting a bunch of different 9's, came back to a SP-01 I had just about given up on and a used Beretta I picked up. Update added to end of the thread...

Hello,
I am a big fan of the CZ-75 B platform. Several years ago, I bought one from the LGS that was sold as a "gun smith special". I replaced the broken slide stop and the gun was the best that I have ever shot. They are not a inexpensive as they used to be, but definitely fit my hand better than some others.

Thanks Chris! Right now a Cajunized 75B compact is leading my list. Wish I got one 10 years ago.... -Chris Ps. The SP01 (top) has a Cajun heartbeat, the .40 below it I polished myself (factory hammer/sear engagement was already very nice from the factory). Both are great shooters, but both are quite a bit heavier than my HP's side to side. The 75B compact weighs about the same as an HP,,, and might make a nice companion

Some time back, I found a like new Kimber Aegis Pro ll in 9mm. It has a lightweight frame, and is a custom shop gun, so it has all of the bells and whistles, including thin grips. This gun is a real pleasure to shoot, and has not choked on any ammo that I fed it, including my handloads. I wish that I could shoot this gun to it's full capabilities. These are not cheap, but certainly are quality. Just a thought.

Hello, This a picture of what the CZ-75 B can do as far as accuracy. Thanks Chris! Right now a Cajunized 75B compact is leading my list. Wish I got one 10 years ago.... -Chris It was/is the most accurate 9mm that I owned at the time. Not bad for a "gun smith project pistol"! Best, Chris

gt40doc, that sounds pretty nice. With prices the way they are now, If I go CZ, with cost of Ghost or CGW goodies, I'll be looking at Hi Power msrp range anyway.
For something that fun to shoot, cost might be worth it.
Thanks!

The CZ has really gone up in price over the years... nice guns... but were even nicer when they were nice AND cheap... Back about 1995 Mrs. CXM decided she wanted to buy a CZ75b... I was able to buy her a NIB CZ75b for the princely sum of $179 at a gun show in Dallas. The CZ was almost as ugly as Hillary Klinton... but boy could it shoot (upon reflection upon the history of the Klintons lots of people have found they can shoot too... )well. I had some trigger work done on the trigger and it became a really fine shooting pistol... AND it is extremely reliable... I'd like to find some nice grips for the old CZ... it still has the black plastic grips it came with... guess I need to look around and see what people think work well for grips. Mrs. CXM is a big lover of the 1911 pistol and the .45 cartridge and shoots them well... but she recently re-discovered the CZ and is shooting it again after a gap of quite a few years... and it is still accurate and reliable... not a bad combination. For the standard CZ 75B frame, the wood grips from CZC (pictured above) fit me well and make a comfortable range setup.
I got some loks and played around with them (on the 75B in this photo). I found them to be a bit aggressive for the standard frame, but good for getting a high grip on the SP01. If I was really interesting in speed, I'd go with the Loks on the SP01.
For just getting a good grip at the range, I like the new factory rubber grips that come on the SP01. They can be grabby with clothing though.
The new Lok Bogies are supposed to be the best of both worlds, but I have not tried them yet.

Rented a 92fs and a 75 D compact tonight. The CZ fit just right, exactly what I was looking for.
Unfortunately needed to buy a new alternator for the wife's car tonight too. So after I save up a bit again, I think a new CZ is on the horizon.
Thanks all!

Mister Ruber, TriStar is importing some very well made clones of the CZ 75B (S-120, L-120, T-120) and CZ 75B Compact,(C100, T-100, P-100) the latter having an aluminum frame (in 9mm, the .40 version has a steel frame) and makes a dandy hi-cap CCW piece. All of them are made in Turkey by Canik55 and sell at Bud's Gun Shop for well under $400. I have detail stripped both full size and compact models and find their finish workmanship to be as good as CZ, and I'm a real CZ fan, so that is hard for me to say, but it's true. They are very accurate pistols to boot and use any magazine made for their CZ counterparts. Cajun Gun Works is making some aftermarket parts for them, so they are customizable if you want to look at improvements. However, parts interchangeability with the CZ pistols is iffy except for mags and grips. But they are totally satisfactory right out of the box. www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_21_1860/products_id/85176/TriStar+85060+S-120+Pistol+9mm+4.7%22+17%2B1+Blk+Checkered+Gripswww.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_21_1860/products_id/85177/TriStar+85070+S-120+Pistol+9mm+4.7%22+17%2B1+Blk+Checkered+Gripswww.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_21_1860/products_id/85180/TriStar+85099+T-120+Pistol+9mm+4.7%22+17%2B1+Black+Poly+Grip+Bluwww.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_21_1860/products_id/82943/TriStar+85009+C-100+15%2B1+9mm+3.7%22www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_21_1860/products_id/85178/TriStar+85109+T-100+Pistol+9mm+3.7%22+15%2B1+Blk+Poly+Grip+Bluedwww.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_21_1860/products_id/5387/TRI+85085+P-100+9MM+3.7IN+BLK+15RD(PS - Later note - these pistols have a non-decocking safety that CAN be set with the hammer fully down and uncocked.) Hope this helps. JayPee

Thanks JayPee!
I need to investigate these, the T-100 looks close to what I want, same weight/size as the CZ compact. I actually would prefer the safety over a decocker.

Chris Chris, there are extensive user evaluations of these pistols over in the Clone Club section of the original CZ Forums going all the way back to 2014. Go here and you should find a mountain of info on them: www.czfirearms.us/index.php?PHPSESSID=950b3b40bd173067d7eed9022b497bab&board=27.0Also, Bud's is not always totally up to date on its descriptions of guns, so I'd suggest you go to the TriStar website and verify the specs of the pistol you want before buying one from Bud's. It's here: www.tristararms.com/products/semi-automatic-pistols/I own three of these and think they are what CZ used to be - worth a lot more than they charge for them. JP

I own three of these and think they are what CZ used to be - worth a lot more than they charge for them. JP It hurts my head to see what CZs go for these days. My first CZ pistol was $300 new and didn't have any of the rough tool marks coming on many of the new guns. And the internet sales are crazy. Our local shop has SP01's under $600, and they still sell online for $750... 😳

Yeah, when you can find one to buy. CZUB has gotten pretty unpredictable about supplying CZUSA.

Another really good choice for a 9x19mm is the S&W M39-x pistol IMHO, the M39 has the best ergonomics ever in a pistol... of course that may just be how it fits me, but I really like the M39... I bought my first M39 when stationed on Guam... back then the BX sold them for about $79.00. The B52 crews bought a lot of them for use as carry pistols in place of the very much under powered S&W Model 15s ( problem was not the gun or the caliber, rather the ammo the AF provided... 130gr full jacket at something like 750fps!!!) The PX sold all the S&W M19s they could get at $97.50, in part because they would fit in the issue leather gear... in addition, they sold masses of 1911s and Colt's Commanders. This M39 came from a police agency and was issued to a big wig who kept it in his safe... it was like new in the box when I got it. FWIW... Chuck
