I've had excellent service from all my Com-block surplus pistols- or they'd be gone. (also excellent service from my Russian long guns) My favorite pocket carry pistols Are Russian MAKAROVs, & my POLISH P-64 both in 9x18mm due to SIZE & DA/SA action & ability to feed JHP reliably. My Makarovs are a matched pair in 9x18mm, & .380, but I keep the.380 in reserve - in case 9x18 ever dries up. I have replaced springs & put on the ISRAELI FAB DEFENSE trick Makarov grips, a wonderful upgrade. I enjoy TOKAREVS also, & have 2 full size - in 9mm & 7.62X25, + a Zastava M88A Compact TOKAREV in 9mm - it is my favorite TOK. I like my CZ-52, bought in unfired/unissued condition, I have owned an Ex-German police 9mm Sig Saur 225 P-6 9mm, for about 10 years, it is DA/SA, accurate & reliable, also feeds JHP. It is a favorite I have carried. Also fond of of STEYR GB, mine is a late commercial model of this 9mm SA/DA pistol that was designed for the Austrian military (but Glock won the contract)It is a large 9mm, digests anything, extreme accuracy due to fixed barrel & light recoil, 18 round magazines. I have never felt under armed. I have also gone out of my way to live in a safe area, & do not make enemies or act the hero. My handguns are for enjoyment & SELF DEFENSE ONLY.

All things considered, a well maintained (or carefully refurbished) surplus gun should perform perfectly satisfactorily for self defense.
Of course you never know how a gun has been maintained (though it's appearance can give clues) but simple preventive maintenance and some careful inspection followed by a good bit of test firing should result in a reliable gun. I have quite a few surplus high powers and all have proved reliable after going through an inspection/servicing process.
I do agree with the previous comment someone made about being nervous about novices carrying a surplus gun (which I would presume for the most part have not been inspected/serviced.) OTOH, that may be all some can afford so I can understand taking the risk.
FWIW

May have mentioned before (I go on so many gun sites) that my favorite "light" carry gun is one of my Beretta M71 .22s. Slim without being small, reliable, accurate. I know what many say about .22LR for SD, but it works for me.
