Don't you wish you had a Singer 1911A1 that you could run like a Singer sewing machine...  V/r Chuck I own a few P08 Lugers, and they would be better than nothing, but not my first pick. My 1942 Walther P38 seems to be reliable, but I have not run a lot of ammo through it. On the other hand, I own a 1944 Colt 1911A1 that runs like a Singer Sewing Machine, and would have no qualms on using it. Yes, I sure do!!! I feel sure that if I did own one, it wouldn't be a regular range gun......due to their current value. Somehow I fear that using the old saying "runs like a Singer Sewing Machine" is sort of giving my age away...LOL!! |

I guess I have to wave the "to each his own" flag here. If I had no other choice I would carry a surplus gun, but throughout my LE career I was a stickler for carrying only the best, and then taking meticulous care of it and its magazines - not being rich but having one heckuva credit rating. To this day, I don't put high round counts on my carry pistols. My primary carry pistol is a CZ 85B, and it has about 500 rounds through it. I run my carry ammo through it once a year to function check it and put all the practice wear on an older CZ 85 I have. When the '85B gets upwards of 1,000 rounds through it, I'll retire it and start over. Paranoid I agree, but having spent 28 years as a cop in California and having lived under the real threat of having to use a gun to defend my life with, I'm not taking any chances. I especially don't like to see novices carrying surplus pistols. I'm with jaypee on this one. If I had no other choice, I'd carry my Israeli '91 HP surplus (that has yet to fail me at the range) and feel pretty comfortable about it. My carry guns are a 3" Colt New Agent .45 ACP, and a 3" SIG P938 9mm, with a spare mag in the pocket. If I go to an area where I want a high cap pistol to carry, I grab my CZ 75B Omega 9mm. All three were bought new, and wrung out at the range to pass my reliability test.
If I ever wanted to start carrying the '91, I'd take it to a reputable smith and have him do any necessary replacement upgrades...wring it out at the range to double-check reliability...and strap it on.

I have no concerns when carrying my Israeli surplus 92 Compact or FN 140-DA, nor my Hungarian surplus R61.    But I've owned some surplus guns I would not have carried.  Sent from my VS980 4G using proboards |

I haven't had good luck with surplus pistols, even brand new ones. Ten years ago I bought a brand new, in-the-box Walther P-38 (P-1). Within fifty rounds its hammer springs failed and I lost the double action mode, which is the mode I would have used had I needed to defend myself with it. Similarly I bought a new-in-box FM-90 in 2009 and after about 100 rounds I noticed that the firing pin was beating a divot in the face of the hammer. As it turned out, the hammer had not been heat treated and would have started generating misfires soon. By the time it was over I replaced most of the rear end of the fire control system, but refused to carry the gun. It's a range banger. I can't count the number of posts I've seen over the years in which someone took a surplus pistol to the range and found it to be so messed up it was unusable for one reason or another. So my reluctance to carry surplus pistols isn't just due to paranoia. There are some real-life experiences behind it.

At the price, a Nagant revolver was a great value... and actually shot as a bonus...  One must have failed somewhere, but I have never seen nor even met anyone who had a Nagant malfunction... the power of the cartridge is an entirely different matter... I carry two surplus pistols a Walther PP Super surplused from the German RP (Rineland-Pfaltz) police and a CZ-75 pre b surplused from the Czeck state police. These guns have functioned flawlessly over the several years I have carried and shot them them. My wife carries a Walther PP in 7.65mm also a German RP surplus pistol. I recently added a Walther PP in .380 not a surplus gun but made in Germany none the less. I used to carry a Walther P-1 but I disliked grip bottom mag release. The gun performed flawlessly and was and is quite accurate.

Nope. I've carried my DDR Makarov, an old "Eagle" Radom, various surplus Hi-Powers, and I recently changed my work carry from a CZ82 to an Israeli surplus Sig P228.
And that's all I have to say about that.

The term 'surplus gun' offers one a huge and varied interpretation ranging from revolutionary war flint lock to a current military rocket launcher. That said, limiting myself to centre-fire, semi-automatic pistols and double action revolvers, no, I don't feel under gunned.

Last Sunday I had one of my CZ82s out and it shot so well that I've switched back from the P228. I'm sure that will change again when I take the Sig out in a few weeks.

Then there is the Aussie who has carries a BHP and has a spare - and a spare pair. Deciding which of 4 nearly identical carry guns to take on a given day can be problematic.

I have bought used guns for years... I expect to have to make a repair from time to time but the reality is I don't have to do much to them besides clean them up for the most part.
My first pistol was a surplus pistol... a Colt's 1911A1... worked great... same goes for a bunch of surplus HPs I bought over the years along with all sorts of other odds and ends... Beretta 951s; Styer 1912s; Astra 600s; various Walthers; Brownings; Lugers from assorted makers; 1911s from assorted makers; CZs; SIGs; Glocks and others. A few needed work, but over all they were reliable and the ones that gave problems initially worked well after some tinkering...
I suppose the answer is yes, I'm comfortable with a surplus gun.
