Two years new to handguns, looking forward to learning. How would I go about putting a 4 5/8" barrel in a 1981 GP Competition Model? Thanks for the help.

Welcome crosstrainer. I had never trying putting a standard barrel into my GP Competition. But you got me thinking about it. I removed the counter-weight, and the front bushing of the GP Comp looks fine. I used a spare Remsport replacement barrel (with nub) and seemed to drop in without issue. Guide rod and spring all set in without a problem. Had to play around a little as the tolerances seemed tighter to get the slide to slide onto the frame, but once done all seemed fine. Loaded some snap caps and cycled without any problems. Now, not sure of the accuracy, but the front bushing seemed good. Of course I have not tried it at the range, so...... Have you tried swapping out barrels? Let us know how you do. A few images with GP Competition and Remsport replacement barrel

Thanks much for the response. I would need a "standard" slide with front sight. I really don't want to alter the GP Com Mod slide to accommodate a front sight. As soon as I can come up with a barrel, to start, I'll get back to you. Know anyone who has one for sale?
PS After some research, I don't understand what a nub is.

Yes, you are correct, you would need to have the GP slide cut for a front sight as the sight for the pistol is mounted on the counterweight. Not worth doing in my opinion unless there is an issue with your GP35 Competition. Hi Power slides and barrels come up on eBay, you might want to check there every so often. Some slides offered are complete with barrel, sights, guide rods and internals others just the slide only. Individual barrels also come up on a regular also. Given the cost involved, you might wish to look at some surplus Hi Powers on Gunbroker from Mach 1 or DWJ Imports, both have excellent reputations. THen you can switch slides back and forth, get the benefits of the GP 35 Competition's enhanced trigger and also have another Hi Power. Cant have too many. The nub is the small protrusion at the top of the back side of the barrel above the feed ramp. Some Hi Powers have it others dont. Bob Reed posted some info a short while ago regarding barrel measurements, link to the thread is highpowercollectors.proboards.com/thread/1015/barrel-length-newbie-question-4

Once again, very helpful. I've searched for a video describing a full disassembly of this 1981 gun. Perhaps it's the same as a standard Hi Power of the same vintage. One issue that I've encountered while reassembling, after field stripping, is the need to lift the barrel with a letter opener through the opening in the side of the slide in order to bring it far enough to the rear to engage the safety lever in the take down notch. Is there a fix for this or is it the nature of the beast.

For some reason the slide to frame tolerance with barrel and guide rod in is rather tight. I believe it is where the foot of the barrel comes into contact with the locking cam/crossbolt. For some strange reason this only happens occasionally, at times the slide slides right on, other times turning the frame over helps, and other times I manipulate the front of the barrel up and down and the slide goes on. Not sure if it is worth fixing, and if so, best for a Hi Power knowledgable gunsmith.

So far, this GP Competition does not want to simply slide together on every occasion. Putting down pressure on the front end of the barrel enables the foot to pass over the locking cam every time I've tried it. Problem solved! On to understanding full disassembly for cleaning and possible upgrades.

Crosstrainer, do you have the manual for the GP35 Competition? If you need a copy send me a direct message with your email and I will send you a PDF of the manual.
