Just got a "sterile" Chinese M20 Tokarev, a pistol I've wanted for a long time. All matching, no safety, no import marks; surely a VN bring-back made in the mid 1960s. Serial # is 'N 021XXX'. Anyone know how to date these? I've seen a few posts on the subject, but mine doesn't seem to fit.

Hello,
Just checked one website and don't know if the information is accurate. But here is the suggestion, take the year 1953 and add the first two numbers in the serial number and that should give you the manufacturing date. That is how the Chinese production years were determined with the type 54 Tokarev.
I am sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

The M20s were supposedly made ca. 1963-66, so that doesn't fit here. Closest I've come is that mine is among the first 25,000 produced, but that's without knowing how many were made, or or what year it was made. Oh well, I'll keep digging. Thanks.

Hello jonnyc,
As a member of the Horry County Tokarev Society, I would love to see a picture of the M20 if you have time to post one!
Thanks,
Chris

It's down in the gun room, but I'll try to post some pics tomorrow. Latest info I've found is that the two numbers that begin the M20 serials are effectively date codes. For example, "11" is 1964 and "12" is 1965. I will posit that mine, an "02" is from 1963. Until I find something to confirm or refute that.....it's from 1963!

johnnyc, We need to make you a honorary member of the "Horry County Tokarev Society". Believe it or not, we actually had t-shirts made. It's probably the smallest Tokarev Group in the US... Chris

I have 5 Tokarev pistols, and maybe the worlds largest collection of 7.62x25 cartridges (no, really!), so I should be a member! Got any 2XL?
