I have been looking for a SIG 320 with a thumb safety for quite a while... with no luck... SIG had not yet shipped their M17 so I was stuck. So much to my surprise my luck changed.
Day before yesterday, I got a call from my LGS owner who informed me he had gotten in two of the finally released SIG M17 pistols as bought by the Army. He said he recalled I was interested in this gun and would I like one of them? Would I like one of them? Absolutely!!
So it was off to the LGS and a desert tan (sorta tan) M17 followed me home... The SIG M17 comes in the current (smallish) black box and two magazines with the usual paper stuff and mandated lock that few people use. I may be in a minority, but I like the new boxes much better than the old SIG boxes that were big enough to require a duce-and-a-half to move them.
Left view
OK... so on the left side we see something pretty much like the rest of the P320s in the world... small slide release with a protective 'berm' around it to lessen the chances of thumbs activating it. Unlike the regular P320s the M17 version has the thumb safety located toward the rear of the frame.
RIGHT VIEW
On the right side of the frame, we can see the slide release and thumb safety are both ambi. The mag release can be reversed for use by those of the left hand persuasion... For me at least, the mag release on the right hand of the slide (left hand configuration) works a lot better than on the left side of the pistol... mag release on the right side does not require moving the pistol in my hand for a one hand mag drop.
REAR VIEW
The rear of the gun looks much as you would expect from a striker fired gun... You can also see the rear tritium sight
REAR SLIDE VIEW
Here you see the rear of the slide showing the rear mount for the tritium sight. The sight can be remove along with the mount to which it is affixed opening up a cut out in which SIG's optical sight can be mounded without any modifications.
I heard a story from someone I think would know that SIG has been buying very large quantities of tritium sights for the M17 contract as well as for the P365 which has the night sight standard. Apparently SIG can do this because they are able to get very favorable quantity discounts on tritium sights... I expect to see a lot more SIGs with night sights at good prices.
Finally, here is the magazine... it also has a khaki magazine floor plate... a nice touch...
First glaces observations:
1. Gun is nicely made and fits together well...
2. The grip feels a bit large in my hand... I can shoot the P320 well so I don't think this will be a problem, but I like the grip of the FN509 with the small insert a LOT better...
3. The night sights work well... easy to pick up and bright
4. This will be a pretty big gun with the 21 round magazine installed... it is big as it comes out of the box.
5. My M17 has a khaki finish slide... all the M17s I saw in SIG advertising had black slides... I think I like having all the same coloring...
6. This is a BIG gun...
Next... test firing... part two to follow.
