If you are like me, you may well have been intrigued by the Remington R51 when it was relesed to much fanfare back in 2014. Also, if you're like me, you might have opted to pass on buying one when all the reports of problems with the R51 began to surface. So now, 2 years after the re-introduction of the R51, what is its current status? That is preciesly what I wanted to know when I came across a brand new R51 at a gunshow last weekend for less than $300. The video below will reveal how it performed!

Hello Howard,
Another great review! Too bad about the performance of the HP's in the R-51. I don't have any answers on the subject knowing some problems my fellow shooters have reported with their R-51's. One would wish that Remington "might" be interested in solving that problem...

Thanks Chris! I agree, but I'm also not ready to throw in the towel on the R51 just yet. I'm going to give it a fair chance and see where we end up. It may yet be a keeper.

As you know some of the first R51s were flawed... Remington fixed the problem, but by then the damage was done... combine that with the fact smaller 9x19mm pistols have come along from S&W, SIG, Glock and others the R51 was pretty much doomed... A friend bought one that was eventually replaced with the upgraded version by Remington... and he likes it a lot... works well and it is pretty accurate... My guess is yours will work fine... the question now is where does it fit in your gun collection plan? Here's the thing, I just like the pistol. I like its styling and it's fairly unique operating system. It feels good in the hand, and it points pretty naturally. I've got enough firearms to fill pretty much any serious role, this is one for when I feel like carrying something different. Kind of like a Walther PPK. Another well done, and informative video. I had not read anything about these pistols for quite a while now, and was wondering if they were still on the market. I like the old original handgun, but shied away from the new model due to so many problems folks were experiencing. I will look forward to seeing what, if anything, Remington will do to make your handgun whole.

Howard... I'm going to guess the R51 isn't going to be in production very long... so your example is worth keeping for that reason alone... When I saw it I was reminded of a bright orange water pistol I had as a kid... which was incidentally completely reliable...  At least until someone stepped on the butt of the gun... that was the end of the water gun...  It had good lines and shot a good stout stream of water too!!! As to accuracy, the windage should be easy enough to adjust... but I would try other ammo before doing anything to the gun... I have some guns that are very picky about the ammo they shoot well... I have a Beretta M951 that won't shoot well at all with Winchester, Remington or Federal Ammo... it is reliable but the a target you shoot with that ammo looks like a shotgun pattern... But feed it S&B or GECO and it shoots like a house afire... And suddenly you have decent groups... Anyway, you may find your R51 likes some particular ammo... I have found that CORBON hollow points work in pistols that ordinarily balk at other hp ammo. Their rounded plastic tips help them feed without hanging up.
My smallest full size 9 x 19 is my Zastava M88A Compact Tokarev. Once its Magazine disconnect was removed, it soon became my SMALLEST favorite 9. They are also found new for under $300.
I do really like the DA/SA action, size, & reliable digestion of my 3 Makarovs. all highly recommended bargains. Certainly not as pretty or collectable as that R-51. Didn't Remington just go into receivership ?
