Been in a precision gun mode recently. A completely new game for me.
Picked up a Tikka CTR, 20" barrel. 6.5 Creedmoor.
The rationale was; it's a lot lighter at 7.5# than the 24", T3x TAC A1 I have.
I figured the trade off of losing 80 FPS+ velocity was worth 4 or 5#'s.
The Tikka's come with a 0 MOA rail, which sort of sucks if you plan on shooting to 1K yds. and out.
I used Burris XTR Signature rings with this one and picked up 25 MOA in elevation.
Installed an "XLR Envy" chassis which keeps weight down and has some nice features.
I installed a "Yo Dave" trigger spring and adjusted weight of pull to just under 1 3/4#'s.
I'd done load development previously but wanted to fine tune the rig.
The Steiner 3-15X is MIL reticle with half MIL hash marks- which allows use as a ranging reticle after chrono'ing and working up D.O.P.E. The scope is also MIL (1/10th) adjust.
(A MIL reticle scope with MOA adjustment makes zero sense to me, it is counter intuitive and requires a mental conversion from MIL to MOA)
The load I settled on was a 140 gr Hornady ELD-M (killer BC), Hornady brass (it is available locally), RL16- which is known for temperature INsensitivity and CCI BR2's.
I have 3-bolt guns and an Aero gas gun in 6.5 CM.
What has been fairly amazing is; ALL of them are under 1 MOA guns, if not 3/4 MOA- shooting the same ammo.
Load development/ladder tests had nearly everything shooting under 1 MOA.
I am not that lucky.
The cartridge is a wonder for precision Long Range.
At any rate the gun is a shooter; easily under 3/4 MOA and approaching 1/2 if I have the discipline to shoot it properly; stay with the gun and scope, sight picture, trigger control (I'm an old USPSA shooter- "as fast as possible, as accurate as necessary, as many as it takes"- patience is not my strong suit).
We had a "contest" between the three of us at the range- everything's the "Worlds Championship" anytime we get together.
The drill was; two shots on "evildoer" (behind hostage), 4 seconds par time. Hit the hostage and you're out.
Here's mine; there was a collective sigh from my buds when we retrieved targets.
(Oh, all shooting was 100 yds. from bench- it was too muddy to go prone)
