My competitive shooting life has been primarily USPSA, NRA Action and a bit of dabbling in Bullseye and the old "Masters" event.
All of it handgun, with exception of some carbine/rifle in "3 gun" years back.
It was rare to ever shoot past 200 yds. in these disciplines (back then).
I'm putting together the ability to shoot to 800- 1200 yds. at the ranch.
There's a section with hilly pasture that's will work.
The farthest I've shot targets or game is 500 yds. This will be a new learning curve.
I purchased a 6.5 Creedmoor "chassis" gun that's a Howa action/barrel, put a Trijicon 5-20X50 Mil reticle scope with a 20 MOA mount on it.
I'm working on getting through a couple hundred factory rounds (Hornady 140 OTM) so I have once fired brass for load development.
The plan is to shoot Hornady's ELD bullets to maximize the cartridges long range potential.
Initial "dial in" at 100 yds. was uneventful.
Used Hornady factory "American Gunner" 140 gr. JHP's as I didn't have a .264" pilot for case trimmer- therefore handloading was on hold.
Best group at 100 with factory ammo.
Went to a shooting/hunting pals place this AM.
He has a grass landing strip we shoot on occasionally.
Nice part is it's 15 minutes from my door.
There's a crown halfway down the strip that makes shooting past 500 yds. impossible unless you're 10' above grade.
We made the best of it and set up a couple targets at 500 yds.
I didn't have accurate "come ups"/ Ballistic Data for the Hornady "American Gunner" factory ammo we were shooting, so I took a WAG at velocity/BC of bullet.
My first two shots were the two low, side by side ones.
I came up two (1/4") clicks, which is 2.5" at 500.
The four, higher rds. are <MOA group at 500.
We were fighting gusting, quartering winds (16 to 25 mph, South Westerly) and shooting ammo that isn't supposed to be as accurate as the ELD bullets I'll load.
My young bud made a dandy head shot at 500, first shot.
Pretty happy with that.
