He's a Filipino soldier (a major judging by his rank) part of the PEFTOK contingent that saw action in the Korean War. If I recall correctly, the CHICOMS and NORKS avoided combat with the Filipino troops when they could... apparently they didn't like the outcome of encounters with Filipino troops...
