Took my "Sifu" (Chinese Martial Arts Instructor) to the range this AM. She had talked about learning to shoot for a couple years, she was finally ready today. I'm long in the tooth with a lot of mileage. Therefore my focus is "soft form" and I very much enjoy the Jian sword forms. I am no longer up to Kung Fu and flailing about. Grace has tolerated (graciously) my ineptitude for a decade now. I figured it was my turn to give something back. I'd explained that shooting was the " 'merican martial art" and the principles of WuShu transferred nicely to shooting; stance, balance, focus, etc. Grace is from China and came from the "First Family" of Chinese Martial Arts. Her Grandfather, that raised her, was Wang Zipping, a Chinese Grand Master that is revered today. He was a most interesting character, a brief bio here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Zi-PingHer mother and father had been placed in "re-education camps" during the Cultural Revolution as they were Dr's- and not to be trusted by proliterate. Both her mother, father, Grace and her two sisters were/are International Masters. The top photo is the first time she had ever fired a handgun. We were at ten yds. She was shooting one of my 9mm 1911's with light, range loads. She was VERY analytical, measured and deliberate in her approach to learning ("build on solid foundation"). It was a pleasure and honor to act as her mentor and Sifu.

Hello huntershooter,
Wow!
What a great experience and story! You finally get a chance to mentor your Sifu and with excellent results! I always love to hear story's about how folks introduce others to the world of shooting, but yours beats anything I have heard in a long time!
Best to you Sir!

I think with some work and practice, that this lady is going to get the hang of pistol shooting!!! Great story, and it looks like all concerned were having a good day.

Hello huntershooter, Well, I have to edit my own post.... (Stuff happens). Grace and her family seem to follow the same course as IP Man. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ip_ManIts cool stuff, but I am glad that you got your Sifu into shooting! That is really neat! Chris

Grace is something. Her husband is a good friend as well. I freely admit to him I'm in love with his wife; explaining it's like the Kindergarten kid that worships his first teacher. He gets it. I credit Grace with keeping me moving. Three times weekly I'm in the school, doing my best to keep decay and infirmity at bay- that old "a body in motion tends to stay in motion" concept. Being "senior student" I teach the Jian (double edge, straight sword) form on the weekend.
My "teaching style" is more D.I. than calm, wise, master- like Grace. I certainly have to reign myself in from my usual approach.
Regarding IP Man; a few years back there was a Chinese film- "The Grandmaster" released. Being a WuShu devotee I went to see it. The story was a (major) embellished version of Yip Man's life- and was quite good- in terms of fantastic cinematography and most of the different WuShu forms represented.

Hello huntershooter, Your story is still a fantastic one! When the Master becomes the teacher and the student trains the Master! It's all good! Having been a certified public school teacher over the years, patience is the key to keeping one focused on the instruction. Yeah, I pretty much wasn't very good when I took Hap Ki Do lessons with the kids when they were growing up. (The school wanted to put both kids on Ritalin and I refused to do that and decided enrolling them in martial arts was a smarter move). However, I taught them to shoot and the principles of firearms safety. BTW, my son teaches school in Suwon, South Korea. The last time I talked with him he explained never put your hands on a student; because they would likely beat your ass! I will attempt to post a picture or two on this thread. Well of South Korea that is..... Best, Chris

As a lifelong martial artist, I can attest to the fact that shooting really is a martial art. It requires mastery of all the fundementals of any martial art (i.e. focus, timing, balance, etc). So the fact that she shot so well on her first visit to the range does not surprise me. That said, she could only demonstrate the degree of accuracy commensurate with the quality/level of instruction she received prior to firing her first shots. You obviously did an outstanding job in that category. Good job!
