At last, I got the 1858 running properly!

Congrats on finding the "gremlin" that was causing the problem of inconsistent ignition. Sometimes, a simple thing/item is the culprit, and other times it can be very involved/costly to produce the desired effect. I love it when a plan comes together, and cost nothing other than time.

Thanks! I was pretty confident I could rectify the issue with the 1858. The fact that it was working right some/most of the time was a good indication that it was fixable. I just had to find the time to tinker with it a little bit! Plus, the fact that it is so darn accurate motivated me to get it working properly. I own a lot of handguns, and I have shot many others over the years, but this black powder cap & ball revolver might just be the most inherently accurate one of them all! Howard

I have to admit, never would I have thought a fixed sighted BP revolver shooting a round ball would ever be that accurate. I have come away with a different perspective of these modern BP cap and ball replicas. I own an 1871 Colt Open Top replica "conversion" in 44cal that shoots darn good, but it shoots a bullet, not a round ball!!
I have always loved the Navy Colt, but was soured on BP and ball. When these guns became available, I had to have one. Mine is a Cimarron, made by Uberti. I was impressed with the fit, the trigger pull, and for sure the finish, when it arrived. I shoot it quite often, as I like shooting the old SAA, and other SA models . I am a handloader, so I can load ammo that won't challenge the Open Top frame, or the shooter's wrist and hand joints!!

I'm right there with you. I was expecting bowling ball size groups from 25 yards. I don't know if I just got lucky, or if my revolver is representative of the entire genre. If it IS, I wish I'd started working with a BP revolver years ago. It actually makes me look good! Howard
