Agreed, Chris. To have suffered a major structural failure in a design that has been in production for 60 years leaves one wondering if this wasn't perhaps one of the USMC's tired, old airplanes we've heard so much about in recent years. I believe the C-130 is still in production, so we don't know of this was a high time airframe or not. Nonetheless, whatever happened to it was beyond the pilots' ability to correct, so it sounds like something that came on hard, fast, and suddenly. God bless all those families and the USMC.

Hello Jer,
The C-130 came out of Cherry Point Marine Air Wing in North Carolina where my son served when he wasn't deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.... Makes it a bit more closer to me than you think. Heck, we get regular refueling landings here from all sort of USMC aircraft from the Cherry Point 2nd MAW. Personally, I consider the visiting aircraft as the "sound of freedom".... Still this is a very tragic event and I don't know all of the details of how the C-130 failed in mid flight. The particular plane is the work horse of the US military.

The C-130 is my 2nd favorite aircraft of all time. Prayers for the families and the entire US Marine Corps.

Hello, Yes sir and we see them regularly here around North Myrtle Beach, SC and most of them are flying from 2nd MAW based in Cherry Point, NC. The C-130 is my 2nd favorite aircraft of all time. Prayers for the families and the entire US Marine Corps. This is very tragic and I wonder if they will ever figure out what caused the failure at altitude? Best, Chris
