My first impression is someone went to great lengths to mimic the original and didn't get it quite right.

I have to wonder if this is yet another variation of the "thumb print" used on the very early HPs. An earlier thread here Canes173 was asking about info on an early HP, and it showed a different thumb print than I am used to seeing. Burgs and Submoa reported that it was just a variation seen in the very early HPs.

Seems that immediately after the Allied troops liberated Belgium, FN either officially or unofficially (I tend to believe the latter) built High Powers from parts made during the German occupation to assemble some unknown quantity of HPs. Reports say these guns were mostly sold to U.S. Troops for souvenirs etc. To me at least this seems credible... Not many months later in Occupied Germany two packages of American cigarettes would buy a very nice Luger. Anyway, the explanation sounds possible to me. FWIW Chuck I have to wonder if this is yet another variation of the "thumb print" used on the very early HPs.
