I thought I would share a photo or two of my 1947 pre-model 10 Snubbie. Plus it gives me a chance to figure out how to post pics. -Vant

That is certainly a nice M&P. Prior to WWII S&W used to advertise that it was ok to shoot the very high powered 38/44 Heavy Duty ammo (precursor of the 357 Magnum and pretty close to today's 'lawyerized' 357 Mag loads.) That would certainly make a potent carry load. FWIW CHuck I thought I would share a photo or two of my 1947 pre-model 10 Snubbie. Plus it gives me a chance to figure out how to post pics. -Vant

That is certainly a nice M&P. Prior to WWII S&W used to advertise that it was ok to shoot the very high powered 38/44 S&W Special (Heavy Duty} ammo (precursor of the 357 Magnum and pretty close to today's 'lawyerized' 357 Mag loads.) That would certainly make a potent carry load. Here is the S&W AD. It dates to about 1939 or so based on the layout and appearance of the ad... Second page of the Ad. After the War, S&W didn't use the ad anymore... probably because despite being safe in the M&P the 38/44 Special ammo must have accelerated wear on the gun. FWIW CHuck I thought I would share a photo or two of my 1947 pre-model 10 Snubbie. Plus it gives me a chance to figure out how to post pics. -Vant

Well Chuck I'm a little easier on her. I feed her some nice, gentle FWC. -Vant

I used to carry a 2" Model 10 for an off duty gun. Loved it! Then I went completely crazy and started carrying a 2" K-38 for crying out loud!

Here is mine. About 1957 vintage. It is on my hip right now since I am running the revolver station at a CW qualification session this afternoon:
(I paid more than $32.50 for it.)

Here's a .38/44 HD and a pre 10 that are a couple years apart. The HD is a birth year gun. They aren't made like this anymore.

CXM, I just got around to reading those ads. Seems that S&W was a bit prone to exaggerate velocities as well as willing to hype their product: "Knock a man off his feet".

Just an FYI if you are interested, southern ohio guns has retired police Model 10's and 64's for cheap. I paid for handpick and received an almost flawless Model 64 with Packmayr grips www.southernohiogun.com/handguns/smith-wessonHere is a picture of it:

There was lots of 'puffing' in ads back then, but I have some pre WWII 38/44 S&W SPecial ammo and I can tell you that stuff was HOT... I chronographed some Western at over 1,200 fps!!! I load some to that spec and it works well... though I only use it in 357 Mags or in the old heavy frame S&W 34/44s. V/r CHuck CXM, I just got around to reading those ads.
