Hello Forum:
I have noticed there appears to be many membership level titles on this forum as compared to other forums. I certainly do not recall them all so I will just invent one as an example: Grand Po-Ba Member. I was am just curious about these distinctions.
I was not sure where to put this and thought items of interest to forum members was the best fit. Feel free to move this if there is a better place.

Hello noglock,
Thank you for your inquiry and we are trying to solicit as much feedback as possible.
Early on, with all us not really familiar with the proboards software really wanted to create special titles for folks that joined us early on. That is why you see essentially four levels of titles based on post counts. Later, we discovered that you could create individual "special titles" for folks regardless of their post counts... So, its work in progress as is most of our efforts to bring people to this new forum and encourage folks to post here.... I will not say for certain that things may change down the road and we move back to the "default settings" on membership rankings. That is up to Chuck, Jer, Vant and I to decide.
Again, thank you for the valuable feedback. It is sincerely appreciated!
Chris

I was wondering about that very same thing, but figured that as long as I was not tagged as a "grumpy old poot", things were o.k. by me. Actually, that might be an appropriate title after all, but don't tell anyone!!

I brought this up because there is a great deal of knowledge and talent out there. I would not want these distinctions to have a chilling effect on growth.
Most forums have kind of a standard ladder and folks know what is required for promotion. Some may want to know what is required for "Grand Po-Ba" status only to learn it appears to be arbitrary. I may qualify for Grumpy Distinguised Novice Member. However, it does not seem to be available.

Hello doc, Well, I can make that happen, but don't want to draw attention to our respective ages... (I am not exactly a spring chicken myself)! I was wondering about that very same thing, but figured that as long as I was not tagged as a "grumpy old poot", things were o.k. by me. Actually, that might be an appropriate title after all, but don't tell anyone!! I guess for the sake of explanation we wanted to remove the "New Member", "Junior Member" titles and supplant them with something else to make folks feel more welcome here! At 62, I don't want to be referred to as "Junior" anyways... If you folks have other suggestions that you want to post publicly or privately, than please feel free to PM me! Thank you and Best, Chris

I just thought that it meant that I was outstanding in my field, even though I don't remember owning a field.

I notice that I have gone from "outstanding" to "expert". There are two main definitions of expert: 1) Somebody from out of town, and 2) An "ex" is a has been", and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure. I guess that I meet the criteria for both of these definitions.

^^Hey, at least you got five stars. With that kind of hardware on your collar, you could be police chief in most of the smaller towns in California.

I remember in early grade school that if someone got one(1) gold star from the teacher, it was something special!! I didn't get very many, but knew folks that did....

Designations change with the different phases of the moon......kinda of fun, don't you think?? I am enjoying it. So far, no grumpy old poot, so I can't complain.

Well, y’all, I guess it’s time to hunker down and tell you what’s going on.
When we first started this Forum, we found that an unusually large number of accomplished, well qualified contributors had joined our group – gents who had spent years contributing to our hobby, both on the range and on the keyboard – and, because of the way our software is set up, every one of them was promptly slapped with a very undeserved “Newbie” label. Well, that seemed very wrong to us and we’ve been pulling our hair out ever since then, trying to design a system that will harmonize past accomplishments with post counts and seniority on this Forum, and which will also be encouraging to our newer folks. Believe me, it’s a darned tough proposition to deal with. I can’t say we won’t end up just going back of a post count system, but we’re not quite ready to admit defeat just yet.
So, when you see the number of stars change, or your title changes, or some other aberration goes on, it’s just Chuck, Chris, Mike, and me backstage juggling stuff around to see if we can’t come up with a system that will better honor our members than the ones usually found on internet gun forums.
Now I’m off to the adult beverage store. JayPee
