I've always loved revolvers. And I should see a shrink on some of the beauty's (mainly S&W) that I've purchased and sold over the last 35 years. For some reason I've always liked the Ruger SP101 5 shot stainless steel revolvers since they came out. But never purchased one due to being stubborn holding a grudge against Bill R. from 1994 Crime Bill shenanigans (I only own a 10/22 from 1985). And I wasn't going to drop over 5 bills either for a pocket pistol. That changed yesterday.
Currently I'm laid up on a medical leave of absence and going stir crazy. Ran upon a LNIB SP101 357 magnum w/2.25" from original owner at a price I said I'll never see again. Should have it sometime next week, then I'll post up some pictures. Not sure it's purpose yet other than shooting it. 38spl for range, and 357 magnum for defense. I bet the recoil is pretty sharp, like sticking your hand out the car window and slapping a mailbox @ 55mph with magnum loads. But Ruger revolvers are tuff, and hold a good reputation for overall reliability. Thought I'd share.

Wags,
One of my bosses a SP-101 as a backup gun. The chubby wood/rubber grip helps soak up the recoil quite a bit, but it's still not for the faint of heart. Although I liked it, I already had a S&W 640 at that point. Like most Rugers, it's built heavier than the S&W. I suspect that it will handle all the magnum loads you want to shoot through it, if you're so inclined.
They're pretty cool.

I have a couple SP 101's A 4 inch with target sights and a 3 inch. Great revolvers and tough enough handle whatever you want to load. I think the 3 inch barrel is perfect for the balance of the gun. Factory grips are good for carry and smaller hands but not so much for heavy loads. I have Hogue grips on the 4 inch and Crimson Trace on the 3. Both make them much ergonomic for me and more pleasant with heavy loads.

Thanks for the feed back guys. Still not sure the role this new revolver will play out for me. I do like Mika Pocket Holsters if I need a pocket holster. And found a one man company named Chig's Grips that makes wood insert grip panels. I did see a nice picture of an SP101 that was Cerakoted (frame and barrel), but cylinder & ejection rod, cylinder release button, hammer and trigger were left stainless. Looked nice. chigsgrips.com/mikaspocketholsters.com/

Excellent choice. I carried one as a BUG years ago, loved it.

Hello wags,
Congratulations on your upcoming acquisition. I too owned a SP-101 years ago. I believe and at the time I carried it in OWB holster and used to carry it when I was out shooting sporting clays locally as a lot of the stations were in wooded areas. (I am not fond of poisonous snakes and carried my shotgun unloaded between stations)!

What I have been using for over twenty years with the SP-101s replacement is an Alessi ankle holster. I highly recommend that one.

My first carry gun. I had a 3" .357. Never shot any heavy loads out of it. Fun to shoot, and very accurate. Only sold it to go with a higher capacity gun.

My new to me SP101 357 magnum with 2.25" barrel arrived Monday. And today the Chig grip inserts. Can't wait to hit the range. Revolver is a 2004 mfg date with little use over the years.
