I've got a transitional Browning Hi Power which I bought in the '80s. It's got the MkIII style ambidextrous safety combined with the old style slide and sights.
Rather than get the front sight removed and the slide milled, is there a reasonably priced source for a replacement either with a dovetailed front sight, or one without collector value?

Reasonably priced? Maybe in a private sale. Currently Midwest Gun Works and possibly Browning have new replacement slides your searching for. They are over $400ea., but OEM Browning and new.

Check eBay. I see HP slides there all the time. Check under "Hi Power" and" High Power". Surprisingly, it often gets different results.

Try CDISales who sell lots of HP stuff on Gunbroker... they sometimes have slides if you ask them though they may not be advertised. Several people have found them there... price as I recall was $200 or so.
FWIW

There's a couple of slides on eBay now. Just keep in mind that there's a chance that a new slide, or new slide and barrel, might not be a fit for your frame. A slide and barrel combo might be less problematic, but I'd still have it checked by a gunsmith to make sure the upper and lower lugs are a good fit.
Bad fit could cause broken lugs, frame rails and (shudder!) the crossbolt in the frame. In the automobile world, they'd call that "totaled".
On the other hand, our favorite Hi Power writer, Stephen Camp, liked to mix and match barrels, slides and frames and sometimes achieved some exceptional accuracy that way.

Thanks for the heads up on ebay Burgs (I'm mainly a amazon tramp). When I searched for high power the first item was a used MKIII slide w/dovetail sights that the OP was looking for. $199.99 and shipping. A few scratches and looked like a 5-digit number was engraved on right side. But hey, at least I know they are more readily available than I expected. Thx.

The description provided sounds like a hi power in the at/or about 88-89 years of production range. A stickler I have found is in mixing frames and slides of the post-40 and pre-40 caliber period. Some geometry was changed with the newer frame.
If at all possible, I would attempt to keep a pre-40 caliber era slide on a pre-40 caliber frame. This sounds like what you have now. Be patient! Slides turn up on a regular basis from pistols which have had their frames destroyed in those jurisdictions where the whole pistol is not rendered scrap.
Now you do not have to reside in one of these jurisdictions yourself. Savvy individuals acquire these upper and some lower parts other than the frame and part them out or sell them as "parts kits."

Thanks to everyone for the information.
Still waiting to hear back on several jobs, so this kind of purchase will have to wait.

Browning definitely has new slides in stock. I called the parts department about a week and a half ago to check availability. Definitely pricey...$400 and change.
