So Burgs, most of us old revolver guys agree that there isn't a revolver made that has the double action pull of a S&W K frame. J frames are smaller, but the trigger isn't in the K frame class.
Well Burgs... Meet Kimber's entry into the revolver field.
As I posted elsewhere, I was running part of the Wingspan event this weekend to support Special Ops Wounded Warrior Foundation. And while doing that fell in with two of the guys from Kimber. Started talking about their new resolver and of course offered my opinion that nobody has yet equaled S&W's double action trigger pull. So they invited me to compare them, and I did:
Their first revolver side by side with my Model 19 snubby wearing the Uncle MIke's/Spegal boot grips.
First off, the trigger pull was VERY, VERY close to my Model 19, and my 19 has been dry fired tens of thousands of time as I used to shoot it in the PPC snubby Distinguished matches. It does have a bit of a slight halt/hitch about half way from locking lug to locking lug during the trigger pull. My guess is that it is the locking hand falling over the edge of the locking lug bevel. The Kimber guys say this is one of the early ones they first received and the new ones aren't like that. True or not, unless you were a serious target shooter (with a snubby), you would not notice that hitch, and a gunsmith could probably fix it if it is still there and bothers you that much.
Fit to the hand is every bit as good as the K frame... maybe even better. Grips are just about right for me, reach to the trigger is just about right for the finger (I wear a size 9 glove). Although only drift adjustable, excellent sights for self defense purposes. Much better cylinder release in my mind, in just the right place. Being double action, no need to leave the hammer (it is hammer fired, I was told) exposed. Handling and comparing them side by side, hand to hand, I would say that size-wise, it is about half way between a J frame and a K frame.
Shooting them side by side with .357 Magnum ammo, it was VERY comfortable in the hand. It was practice ammunition, obviously, so not rhino roller stuff, but it was .357 Magnum, not .38 Spl. Felt maybe better than my Model 19 snubby with the same ammunition, but that's subjective.
Here's the interesting part Burgs. Told them I thought they had a hot product there, but it was too bad they didn't make it in a 3" version. The Kimber guy I was shooting and talking with grinned and asked me if I had the money put away in my piggy bank. I suspect we just might see this revolver with a 3" barrel real soon now.
If you want to carry a resolver, and want it in the smallest size possible, then those people will probably want to stick with a J frame. Otherwise... hard not to love this Kimber revolver unless you're a thumb-cocking addict. I haven't shot single action in a long, long time.
Burgs, you need to try one.
