Mentioned elsewhere, the Residential Sergeant Major expropriated the Shield 9mm I purchased. I liked that Shield.
Well, last weekend I was running some of the activities at the Wingspan event we held to raise funds for the Special Ops Wounded Warrior Foundation (same thing as the Veterans Family of Businesses event of last year, same collection of usual suspects in attendance). When you looked at the number of retired Delta, SEALs, Special Forces, CIA spooks, etc in attendance, I think there was more freedom per square inch hanging out than anywhere else in America. Ron Bellan is one of the most naturally entertaining and captivating personalities I have ever met, and the custom knife made by Tom Rucker and his wife went for about $6,500 (to a spook with about 40 years of playing overseas, I was told). Good stuff...
Anyways, as Kimber has one of their corporate groups just down the road, they showed up with all their handguns in tow, where attendees could try anything they wanted out. I fell in with them, and as it turned out, they are bad company. I started out just wanting to try out their new Camp Guard 10mm 1911, ended up trying their new revolver (more on that elsewhere), and ultimately compared their Micro 9 to the Shield 9mm.
So after Saturday, Sunday I arrived early for setup with my Model 19 snubby in tow, as well as the Shield. I wanted to compare both of them to Kimber's offerings.
Visually, here's the Shield versus Micro 9 CT for comparison purposes:
The "bad company" reference to the Kimber guys is that I liked the Micro 9 CT so much that now I have to buy one. I liked it that much, so there's another hit on the pocket book.
Lots of reasons to prefer it, especially for High Power people. It's slimmer and smoother, grip feels closer to what I'm used to, trigger is like the HP (my guesstimate - about six lbs), great sights, and an exposed hammer which is what I really prefer. I didn't even notice it included a laser until I pointed it at one of the targets about 10 yards out on the range. Took a few seconds to realize that the red dot dancing around in the middle of the plate belonged to me. Bright sunny day, too. The ammo they were supplying was of some frangible flavour, probably 124 grain. Pleasant to shoot, felt slightly better in the hand while firing than the Shield with the same ammunition. Me likey. Me likey a lot. Events like this when you can fire different handguns side by side and compare them are a big plus for people thinking about buying a handgun, or wondering if there might be something better out there.
I don't know of any pros or cons of the Kimber brand that float around. But I saw them take that Micro 9 out of the box, strip it, wipe it down, lube it, put it back together, then on the display table. Same as the rest of the handguns it got. The thing ran without a hiccup all weekend, as best I saw.
Anyways, there's a Micro 9mm of some flavour or other in my future. Might try to interest the Better Half in trading her Shield on the Micro 9 if she feels she likes it better as well <sigh>.
