I have a 1981 Browning GP Competition Model 9mm and would like to know how to change it to a 4.7" barrel and matching slide. Thanks for the insights. CrossTrainer

More thoughts will follow from others but my first thought is... they are two completely different pistols. You probably need a completely different pistol.
My second thought is a passage from the late Stephen Camp:
"Just for grins I put a standard Mk III barrel/slide assembly on this gun and it worked fine, but the trigger pull was noticeably heavier. It still broke cleanly, but seemed over twice as heavy as when the Competition slide/barrel assembly is in place. I think the difference is due to the different manner in mounting the latter's sear lever, giving it greater mechanical advantage. The lifter is not too high or too short and the gun functions normally with the Mk III slide on it."
If Mr camp is correct, and I assume he was, you may only need a complete High Power slide and barrel assembly. You may also need some work to lighten the trigger. If it was mine... I would keep it in perfect condition target work and find a standard High Power for normal purposes.
Cheers, Tim

CrossTrainer The Competition Model is a valuable and desired gun. I suggest that you sell it, make a nice profit and buy the Hi-Power that you want. I know that's not the answer that you were looking for, but life is hard enough. Why do this the hard way? Good luck.

crosstrainer it can be done. You can occassionally find HP slides and slides with barrels on EBay, although they are not inexpensive. Probably better to spend a little more a buy a used surplus. But to your question, as noted by Tim notes, a HP slide and barrel will fit. I just slide a MKIII slide and barrel from a 94 Sport and it fit and seems to function. Have not fired it in this configuration. I would give you a trigger pull reading on the complete competion, but sometimes the barrel lug makes contact with some interanals of the frame and does not slide back on. It is a probelm I have had since I bought it. I think I need to take a little materal off the rear platform of the barrel lug. Sometimes jiggling the barrel from the front end will get it to slide on completly. As Tim referred to Stephen Camp's assemblying of the two different models, itdoes works, but has some issues with a poor and heavy trigger. When I placed the '94 Sport slide and barrel on the '87 Competition frame the trigger pulled increased dramatically. The Sport has a normal pull of acoutn 4.5 to 5#s, and is very smooth with a great break. It has Cylinder and Slide hammer, sear and trigger and an action job. When placed on the Competition frame, trigger pull was nearly 8#s and a poor pull. Really no need to do this given the cost of a slide/barrel vs a descent surplus, which if you wish you could swap when the desire hit you, and as MR Coffee notes, the Competition is a "valued and desired gun" so why mess with it.
