About 5-6 months ago I ran across a 1911A1 in really nice condition. It had few signs of use and looked nearly new. I got it at a really good price because it is chambered for 9x21 ammunition. Of course no one has 9x21 ammunition so the gun sat and sat with no takers.
SOOOoooo I made the dealer an offer I thought had a good chance of getting me tossed out of the store... To my surprise he took the offer and I wound up the owner of a 9x21 1911.
This new guns posed some problems in the ammunition dept. Happily Star Line actually had some 9x21 brass in stock (because no one wanted it I suppose.... so I bought a thousand rounds which should be enough for several lifetimes. To my pleasure, I discovered you can load 9x21 with 9x19 dies.
Here is a pic of the 9x21 between a 9x19 and a 9x23.
Then to my considerable surprise I got an ad from SGAmmo advertising they actually had 9x21 ammunition in stock so a ordered some...
Quite a few people have never ever heard of 9x21 much less ever seen any of it. This round was originally developed for the Italian market where 'military' cartridges are not permitted for individual citizens. There are several countries with similar laws such as Mexico. My making the cartridge a bit longer people were able to purchase a cartridge of power levels similar to the 9mm Luger. The boxes have the text printed on the box in about 20 languages and the performance data in English and metric format.
Though the case is 2mm longer than the 9x19 it's over all length is the same for both cartridges... You can see how deeply the bullet is seated in the 9x21. I have been told 9x19 works just fine in the Colt 1911 9x21s and the whole 9x21 is simply a way around the calibre restrictions.
All in all this cartridge is an interesting side bar to the 9x19 history.
