I've got this old HP from 1974. Not anything special, original grips are shot, pitting under the grips, not a super desirable version (ugly bushing and spur hammer). But it is a great shooter!! I wanted to upgrade the sights, a bit. It is a great candidate for milling and new sights, but I don't want anything like Novak's and would be happy if it had something like blacked out MkIII sights Has anyone had good luck recently with more modest sight upgrades for the oldee models? Thank you!

Ruber, have you thought about Henie sights for the 74 Hi Power? They have a good selection of sights, and just like Novak, you can send the slide and they will mill and install their sights. I had Heinie install their Slant Pro sights on a project surplus T series about a year ago. If I recall, less than $300 for the sights and install. www.heinie.com/The Slant Pro sights Heinie installed.

Thank you, I had not thought about Heinie sights in a long time. I'll have to dig through their site some more.
Thank you, Chris

LPA has made sights for both the early model HP and later ones as well... Their products used to be distributed by Mec-Gar blut now are direct. They have a bunch of options for adjustable sights. I have one of their adjustable sights on one of my FEG HPs and they work great. Here are some pics of my FEG with the adjustable sights: You might check with Trijicon and True-Glo for night sights as well. FWIW Chuck

Ruber, I sent the slide to Heine after I had bead blasted it with Aluminum Oxide 120. When it was returned I taped off the sights and applied KG Gunkote Deep Flat Black finish. The pistol was a bit rough when I purhased it with a lot of wear, but it was one of my experimental projects. I would think Heine like Novak might retouch the bluing with cold blue if necessary. They are pretty good about not causing damage, but the heine sights require deeper machining than Novak sights. I would call and ask them about any touch up or if they can reblue if needed.

Thank you! Even more things to think about now. This HP had quite a bit of holster wear including the scratches on the right rear of the slide from snaps as well as some pitting. That made it an affordable project gun. So when I saw that Heine had an option for rublue, I thought this might fill two bills at once.
Thank you for all the info! -Chris

And everything that's old is new again... After trying out a bunch of different sights, these are what worked for me- Novak's lo mount carry white dot front with black rear. I get to the range with my coworkers every couple of weeks for some fun shoots, 50 rounds timed drills, little friendly competitions. I like to have something fun, something that works well, and something that I can hit with. As I get older, I have a hard time with the old hump and bump sights. These have made this a new gun for me and it will surely get more time at the range this coming year. Oh ya, swapped out the hammer and grips too. Gotta say Novak did a great job, whole project turned out great!!

Ruber, that turned out great. Looks really good. Novak did a great job. There is a reason so many HP enthusiast sent their pistols to them for sights. Great work, excellent sights, look fantastic with both vintage and newer Hi Powers. Enjoy.

I'm getting to this thread late. ruber Very nice outcome, my friend. I haven't been to the range since before the pandemic (don't tell anyone — I'm a little embarrassed about this), but I'm feelin' ready to go now. ToddSig I like those Heinies. Even a little more than the ubiquitous Novaks. But I got Novaks on my one modified gun. Regarding sights: When you mill the slide, you are "wasting" a certain amount of metal to make the cuts. Should we consider this when choosing sights? Should we select the sights that will require the least amount of metal removal? Or am I worrying amount nothing again . . . ?

Mr C, perhaps Bob is the best and more knowledgeable on this subject, I cant see milling a slide for sights to be problematic. Keep in mind FN/Browning of course did, and many sights are made for the Browning for a direct or near direct fit into the existing dovetail. For example, for most MKII and MKIII Novak sights will fit directly into the rear dovetail, but will require taking the crown off the top of the slide behind the dovetail cut. Other sights that need additional milling should not be a problem so long as the dont cut too deep. Makers like Novak and Heinie have been making their sights for a long time, and dont think there has been any issues.

Added some Navidrex micarta grips. Wish I listened to you all and did all this years ago...
