This is my carry in big bear country....This thing throws the flame about as far as the bullet; and the muzzle blast will wake the dead

Nice gun...
Any of the big S&W magnums will do the job in the woods... you may want to reload for optimum performance but they are all good choices (maybe except a 22 Magnum (better known as the .22Jet) though the volume of sound when it is fired might scare a bear away... In any case when was the last time you saw a .22 Jet for sale?

Hello Sir, That is some "serious" protection in Bear Country! I don't know where you live and wonder if you see a lot of bears in your back packing adventures? This is my carry in big bear country....This thing throws the flame about as far as the bullet; and the muzzle blast will wake the dead
[/p]
Living here in South Carolina, I have seen a "occasional" black bear and most don't seem to be too interested in me. However, I generally go armed and I am alert to their presence. (They can actually be quite quiet in their environment). However, that seems like decent "Beer Medicine" and I would love to share a story (true) of what a professional Alaskan Guide told me several years ago, but that would be "off topic" for this thread... Best, Chris

Only a few black bears in my neck of the woods, even though we did have a lady runner killed by one last year. When I find myself in their vicinity I normally carry a Stainless Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt stoked with some hard cast "Ruger only" handloads using W296.

Every day is woods protection day when you live about 20 minutes from the West Glacier entry to Glacier National Park. A mountain biker was killed by a grumbly bear about 15 minutes from our property last year; Memorial Day was really memorial this year. A bear went through the garage, and got into the garbage while I was on the other side of the yard with three dogs on stakeouts while I did some team training with a Brittany pup we are training up with our Griffs as mentors. Things got exciting for a few seconds when the pup went racing around the house as soon as I let her loose and then returned a few seconds later with the bear on her ass. Fortunately, it got anti-climatic after that as the bear reversed course and beat feet before I even had the pistol all the way out of the holster. But that's why you carry a bear wrench, even around the yard, in this part of Montana. We have our share of cougars passing through as well. Certainly not a 44 magnum, nor a 41 magnum for that matter. But a 220 grain WFN hard cast at 1175 fps, chronographed is pretty respectable; it is also a lot easier to carry and far more manageable (for me) than the big N frames. Now that new 5 shot L frame 44 magnum might work for me as a bear wrench. Wouldn't mind trying one. In the meantime, I'm pretty happy with this. Just need to find a local 1911 guy to add an extra pound and a half or so to the trigger pull weight. 3.5 lb trigger pulls don't belong on shoot-for-your-life handguns.

Just out of curiosity, and with full realization that the caliber isn't optimum, what might be the "best" over the counter .45 ACP bear load for a 5" 1911?
We have lots of bears here, but for the most part I enjoy seeing them around - a lot more than the people anyway. However, once in a very great while some can't be dissuaded from exploring the interior of a house, hence the question.

I'm guessing something along the lines of Buffalo Bore? We have lots of bears here, but for the most part I enjoy seeing them around - a lot more than the people anyway. However, once in a very great while some can't be dissuaded from exploring the interior of a house, hence the question. Funny you should mention "bear in the house"... a guy here last year heard somebody rummaging through his stuff downstairs about oh dark thirty in the morning. Thinking he had some B&E artists cleaning him out, he ran downstairs with nothing but his skivvies on and a club of some kind or other in his hand. Left skid marks on the kitchen floor when bare skin hit bear hair. Bear growled, he dropped the bat, ran upstairs, came back down with his 300 Winnie Mag, and shot the bear at about two feet in his kitchen. Sounds heroic, but I would have considered space and a shot that I would hope would run the bear off - that dying bear pretty much coated his kitchen in blood, aside from the trashing of the kitchen itself that went on. The pictures in the paper showed a hell of a mess. I don't own a .45 ACP Burgs, but I don't think it's anything to sneeze at when you're at spitting distance. A 255 gr. WFN cast bullet at 925 fps isn't exactly feeble: underwoodammo.com/shop/45-acp-p-255-grain-hard-cast-flat-nose/

The biggest bears in the lower-49 are mostly blackies, and either of my 10mm's is more than adequate with Buffalo Bore 220-gr. hard-cast rounds in it.

At other times, I opt for the S&W 625 with the 5" bbl., opting to run-it with Underwood 255-gr. FN hard-cast rounds.

Nice pistolas, guys! I'll have to poke around and see what SG Ammo has. Not many companies ship to my state, but SG Ammo has been very good to deal with.

Burgs, aside from the lesser boutique manufacturers, it comes down to Double Tap, Underwood, and Buffalo Bore, more or less. I think they all offer a heavy, WFN hard cast flavor for your 45 ACP. I'm not up to speed on the nuances of the commercial guys selling/shipping ammo to various states, however. I do buy my Federal HST carry ammunition from SG Ammo, but I got a sense that they mostly concentrated on selling police type loads
