I grew up for the most part in Germany and obtained several items I have directly from German soldiers as well. For the most part they were just young men doing what they thought and had been told was right for their country just like US soldiers. I have a stack of photo albums also, I get the most information from them. They show just how cold and cruel the war could be. However some of the albums also show a lighter side of the war, drinking, singing and you name it.

For the most part I think the front line soldiers were there because they had to be in one form or another. Most of them just wanted to get home alive...
Historically, there were some wars that were fought (at least in the early stages) with some enthusiasm but for the most part that went away pretty fast...
