The palace has announced the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
For many of us she is the only monarch we recall in our life time...
She will be greatly missed...

Death to all tyrants! Oops! Was I not supposed to remember that I'm an American? We kicked those dirty limies out of here 246 years ago. And yet, Americans often like to sentimentalize the British royal family, especially in figures like Princess Diana, whose great contribution to history was that she was a marriageable virgin. Is it because we have an uneasy and deeply conflicted relationship to the idea of democracy? Do we, in fact, mistrust the people, and long for a father figure to control and protect us? No offense to our Commonwealth forum members, of course.
