I would agree... almost certainly purchased by a member of the U.S. Forces and brought home when their tour in Germany ended. Calling it a "GI Bring Back" has potential to confuse people with captured arms Soldiers were allowed to bring back with them from overseas by getting a special order issued allowing the import... Though I have not seen anything on this subject published, I'd suggest we might call the R&G Club guns Overseas Military Purchases (OMP) for reasons of clarity...
I'd be interested in what y'all think? Chuck
If you have a contact for the R&G Club OMP I think that would be a great idea. I'd love to know how and under what circumstances these pistols came to the US. I searched the Internet a bit and found a phone number for "Overseas Exchange Store". Under CONTACTS is a list of phone numbers for a number of countries, and one which appears to be in Dallas: 800-527-2345
This might be a place to begin, if only to be pointed in a better direction. I have no experience with the military.
I have referred to them as "GI Bring Back" thinking there would be at least two categories: "Captures" and "Purchases". I have heard of later High Powers purchased by Viet Nam Vets to bring home, and think the first one I ever shot was one of these. My enthusiasm was far too high at the time and I have no way of contacting the owner. I immediately arranged to purchase my first one, a 2002 Mklll.
Fun project!
Cheers,
Tim

Thanks for pointing it out, and giving us a relatable name, Overseas Military Purchases (OMP).

The Exchange Stores (Army and Air Force Exchange Service operates the PX and BX stores and associated facilities such as Movie theaters, cafeterias, convenience stores, gas/service stations and a lot more.) The exchange is unrelated to the Rod and Gun Clubs which were operated by the services Morale, Welfare and Recreation Funds. They were membership clubs. The rules under which they operated changed in the late 1990s when the rules allowing U.S. personnel to buy guns outside the very restrictive German laws were reascended (Thank Army General Wesley Clark... left wing wacko and big time democRAT for that change. As a result, most of the Rod & Gun clubs no longer exist... if any still exist at all. I would be very surprised if any records still exist from their operations. Because each 'club' operated under the authority of individual base/post command there is/was no central control or management. FWIW Chuck I would agree... almost certainly purchased by a member of the U.S. Forces and brought home when their tour in Germany ended.
