I'm interested in casting a bullet for my Hi-Power. I finally decided the Lyman #356402 looks like something I'd like to try.................but there seems to be a problem. Figured it would be smart to purchase some bullets commercially before buying the mold. The only picture of the bullet from Lyman I can find is this one: But even though Matt's Bullets "claims" they cast one from that mold, it doesn't look like this picture. I'm wanting the sharp shoulder to cut a clean hole in targets, much like a SWC does. Does anyone on the forum have this particular mold.............and does the cast bullet actually look like the picture, or has Lyman changed their mold. (I ask here because I wrote Lyman last Friday and still haven't heard back from them)

The Lyman/Ideal 358402 was very popular in the 1960s and early 1970s and perhaps earlier. The bullet worked fine, but not many people re-loaded 9x19mm back then, in part due to the fact there were no carbide dies for the 9x19 back then, and lubing cases was a pain... When I was still casting bullets I had a 358402 and the bullets look like the photo you posted... a fairly simple straightforward design... probably influenced by the German WWI ammo with the truncated cone design. The bullet was reasonably accurate, easy to cast and easy to load in cases... not much more you could ask for... Several makers made a similar bullet including Hensley & Gibbs. I'm sure several companies still offer that bullet. The TC design isn't my first choice, but it is serviceable and works ok. This is the site to go to for cast bullet information... www.castboolits.gunloads.com/FWIW Chuck

Hello Chris623, I've been looking off/on this morning for the actual cast bullets, but I can't seem to find them....Some close. I found the mold on Amazon.com and a couple of other web sites, but the 4 cavity mold is quite pricey at roughly $93 bucks plus shipping. This is the closest I can find right now. missouribullet.com/details.php?prodId=172&category=5&secondary=8&keywords= I will keep looking sir! Best, Chris

Yes, I'm familiar with Missouri Bullet Co. Their bullet is a .356" bullet. I want .357 or .358 so I can size downward to fit my pistol. It slugs at .3565", best I can read. I'd rather have 'em fit right than loose and rattlin' down the tube.

For now, I'm going to use a commercially cast bullet. It's a Bayou Bullet, coated, 147 gr FP at $.08 each. I ordered 500 pcs. That should give me a good idea if the bullet shape will work. It's a Lyman #356637 or clone.
