Interesting question...
As an aside, the gun is a Canadian Inglis HP rather than Belgium.
I would be more likely to think this is a 'lunch box' gun rather than one in which the s/n was forgotten.
I can't think of any good reason to make an Inglis without serial numbers because the gun would be instantly identifiable as Allied if used by any covert operators...
My two cents worth anyway... someone may know better....

I have read (don't recall where however) some HPs were taken from the FN factory by resistance workers a part at a time a'la Johhny Cash's song "one part at a time.' A war time HP without s/n probably fits into the 'lunch box' category... Internal markings probably would add a lot to the story. V/r Chuck

I have encountered two HP’s through the years that were completely devoid of markings. One had a normally worn finish and the other I only recall had no S/N or other marks, both were “ bring back’s” from Europe.
