Hello, My personal locked and loaded home defense shotgun is my Stoeger M-2000. It's based on the Benelli design and is a lot less expensive... (I actually ordered a spare recoil spring from Beretta/Benelli and the spring is marked in package for Benelli shotguns).... Go figure? Chris

My fav shotguns are Remington 870s... the old ones are extremely well made and smooth in operation. This is a 1953 vintage 870 Wingmaster that belonged to the Salt Lake County Sheriff department... probably for well nearly 50 years when I got it... it was a mess when I first saw it... synthetic stock, beat up fore end, and the presence of finish was 'suspected' but one could not be sure... Clearly this old gun spent a hard life being showered with doughnut crumbs, spilled coffee along with all the other elements...The good thing was the fact the now defunct KY sales had this batch of guns for the grand price of $49 with free shipping!!! Of course when I saw it I was dubious about it ever returning to useful service. About the same time I got the gun, I noticed an ad in Shotgun news (full page no less) from Wilson combat offering their "Remington Steal" package... which advertised that for the princely sum of $159 they would rebuild an 870, replace any internals in need of replacement, put in new hi vis magazine follower and large thumb safety, shorten the barrel to 18" and refinish the gun. To that I added tritium night sights, magazine extension and sling swivels. This is what Wilson sent back, complete with Wilson Border Patrol model roll stamps. Since that time I keep my eye open for beater Remington 870s... Happily I have found others since then... it is sort of like seeing a phoenix arise from the ashes... Do they work? I have taken them to several shotgun courses including Thunder Ranch where they gave yeoman service... Wilson still offers their rebuild program... if anyone comes across an old 870 on the cheap grab it... it can be returned to full service inexpensively. FWIW Chuck

I am wondering if a Mossberg Shockwave with the Opsol adapter and loaded with Aguila buckshot Mini-shells might not be ticket for a home defense shotgun, but I will see if others have success with this combination before spending the bucks.

I have not yet found a pump or semi shotgun that will function Aquila mini shells reliable... they do seem reasonably reliable in a single shot... Hello Chuck, Maybe someone will bring back the Ithaca "Auto Burglar" at a affordable price? I have not yet found a pump or semi shotgun that will function Aquila mini shells reliable... they do seem reasonably reliable in a single shot... V/r Chuck I am wondering if a Mossberg Shockwave with the Opsol adapter and loaded with Aguila buckshot Mini-shells might not be ticket for a home defense shotgun, but I will see if others have success with this combination before spending the bucks. Now, how cool would that be? Best, Chris

V/r Chuck My old Winchester 1300 has never had any problems with them. However, since that gun has an extended mag I keep it loaded with S&B 00 buckshot.

I had an 870 ex police riot gun with over folding stock, It was very reliable & a classic, but I discovered that there was a magazine fed semi auto shotgun, that is instant loading, which I was more comfortable keeping handy around the house, to say nothing of 12 round magazines & 20 round drums. It is a pre-ban SAIGA 12-C Folder, made by the Izmash arsenal in Russia. Basically an AK on steroids. It has "for police use only" stamped on the receiver. I understand a number were imported in the early 1980's in hopes the the police market would be interested. My good fortune they didn't catch on & I stumbled on mine. It has a welded on compensator/door breacher, & requires the long brass base shells. It is amazing in ease of loading, rapid firing & reliability. It's a keeper.

Least night on "GUN STORIES" TV show. They out lined the history of Combat Shotguns, starting with the Blunderbuss all the way through the classic Winchesters & Remingtons of the world wars including LE riot guns. They even mentioned the box magazine fed 870's & Mossbergs. They finished up with the latest semi-auto Italian tactical 12 Ga. issued to USA troops. CONSPICUOUS by its absence - was the IZMASH produced SAIGA 12 Ga Semi-Autos that accept a box magazine, or drums. I know these to be superb shotguns, & can't believe our military is still having to feed a tube magazine - in the overpriced semi auto they have chosen to use. I realize there is some stigma of "bad guy" attached to Russian gear - but I think it is excessively stupid to overlook a better tactical arm, & spend on one - what 4 better ones could be purchased for. Today - all kinds of AK's are being made in the USA, & the 12 ga LYNX (Saiga clone) is made somewhere other than Russia. I just find it incredible that these are so studiously ignored in the quest for reliable function & solid economical equipment. I've owned the above Saiga 12C well over a decade, & consider my self fortunate to have it, I'm a good judge of quality & performance - obviously a fan.

Got a pair of 18in. barrelled Maverick 88s. I'm fine. Both do double duty on the trap range.......with longer barrels, of course.

I did pick up a Mossberg Shockwave, and found it to be more of a novelty than a serious weapon.....
....BUT, the addition of a "pistol" brace has turned it into an entirely different animal, and makes it more than adequate for a home defense role.

Being a law enforcement firearms instructor since 1980, the shotgun has always held a special place with me when it comes to home defense. I have several "combat" shotguns from different manufacturers. A Remington 870 has always been my go to SHTF shotgun until last year. I saw an article on the Standard Manufacturing DP-12. The DP-12 is a bullpup configured double barrel shotgun that holds a total of 16 rounds. I initially looked at it as "gun store commando" weapon with no real chance of being a legitimate defensive shotgun. Then I saw a Youtube video test of the DP-12 done by Larry Vickers. Larry put the DP-12 through a lot of testing, and in his experience it was a stone reliable defensive shotgun with a LOT of firepower.
Based on this test, I found a DP-12 for sale locally and picked it up. Yes, it is a beast weighing in at over nine pounds empty, but is is an easily mastered beast. After taking some time to get over the pump once, shoot twice manual of arms, I found the DP-12 to be a very reliable, accurate, and down right great defensive shotgun. My DP-12 is now my go to home defense shotgun.

A couple of years ago I sold off an old Winchester 1200 with an extra 18” 1300 barrel and picked up the Remington 870 Police Magnums. I added a side saddle for extra rounds and a TRS25 red dot.
