Hi all,
Sorry I have not posted much lately, I am thoroughly enjoying Howard’s videos, but spending a lot more time in the backcountry now that my youngest can carry his own packs for a good distance.
And... kinda had a related question...
My oldest boy likes shooting Granpa’s old .22. A great shooter in rough shape. A couple stock splits we’ve taken care of. But some pretty deep pitting on the barrel.
This is not going to be a show piece, so not looking to dig too deep into it. But we do want to kill the rust.
In the past I have done my share of polishing out pitting, there is too much on this gun to be worth it. We want to clean it out, kill it, and find some other protective finish for it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Chris

Brownell's sells a rust removal liquid, but my old brain can't recall it's name. One uses this liquid as a soak to remove and stop the rust.....just a thought. After all the rust is taken care of, possibly applying a Duracoat finish yourself.....I believe it is now available in a spray can, so one doesn't have to purchase a spray rig.

“ - guns that have been badly neglected and are not worth spending enough money on to warrant a good polishing job - and guns so badly rusted it would take too much valuable time trying to buff off all the rust and crud on the metal. “ Sounds perfect, I think our local shop carries some Brownell’s products, I’ll go take a look for it.

Yep, got it and it worked great! Still not sure what I’m going to finish the barrel with, but just killing the rust was a relief. Thanks!

If you want to "go on the cheap", go to an auto store and purchase spray engine enamel paint(flat, or satin) and just spray it on. It is fairly thick(with enough coats), and will not only help hide the pits, but protect the metal from any new rust......just a thought. If you want something nicer, then use Duracoat, or Parkerize it.....I believe that Brownell sells a parkerizing kit for not a lot of money. Have fun, and be sure to show us the end results.
