Old (1914) Pocket Hammer 38 ACP Colt with ammo. Haven't tried the old ammo yet, but the old gun still works Attachments:

Nice looking old pistol... I have one that is a couple of years newer... they are really fine guns and very well made. Ammo is hard to find, but Star-Line makes 38Super brass which is physically the same size and can easily be loaded to 38Auto levels. FWIW CHuck Old (1914) Pocket Hammer 38 ACP Colt with ammo. Nice one, Rock.
I love the old COLT'S and the Pocket Hammer is one of my favorites.
That box of ammo should probably be saved though.

Hello, Chuck.
Isn't Jonny C a cartridge collector? If so, hopefully he'll see the thread and give an estimate of it's value.
I'd assume that it's worth several bucs just for the Kool factor if nothing else, especially since the box appears full.

I'm not a cartridge collector Bob, but I'd bet that box of 38Auto ammo would bring at least $100 on the open market... possibly quite a bit more... I know I'd like toh have it to go with my 38auto pistols... V/r Chuck Hello, Chuck. Isn't Jonny C a cartridge collector? If so, hopefully he'll see the thread and give an estimate of it's value. Well, I was going to see if some of that old ammo would still shoot, but maybe I'll leave it as is. Do any of you guys know what era this ammo might be from? I inquired on the Colt Forum, and searched the internet, but haven't been able to locate images or information as to when Peters used this style of packaging. It looks as though it might be from the same era as the gun.

I'm no expert on historical cartridges, but I can say this with certainty... that old ammo you have will bring a good bit of money to cartridge collectors. The first box (on the left) is probably from the late teens to 1920s I have seen some of those. The second is a version I have never seen... probably pre WW I which would make it some of the earliest .38Auto ammo made. The third box is also new to me, and the fact it is labeled as 'rifle ammunition' is also curious... There are a few cartridge collector web sites around... you might ask there... but if the ammo were mine I sure would not shoot it... it's way too valuable. CXM, Thank you sir, I appreciate your input. My photos are just different sides of that same old box of ammo. I just bought it because the box and ammo looked "Old Timey" like the gun, and me;)
I have loaded some ammo for the old gun using Starline brass. I kept the loads very light, and tested them first in a modern 38 Super pistol to make sure they were as light as intended. It is my understanding that original 38 ACP was loaded to ~1040 FPS with a 130 grain bullet. My, intentionally lighter yet reloads, average ~950 FPS with a 124 grain Speer TMJ bullet and function the old gun 100%. I once got to shoot a much higher condition Pocket Hammer with vintage 38 ACP factory ammunition. That one functioned 100% too. I guess even at this early stage of semi-auto pistol development, old JMB knew what he was doing.

The original 38Auto was about equal to a 9x19mm and preceded the 9x19 by a few years... The 38 auto is an under appreciated cartridge, but the old guns need a lot of TLC. I have a Colt 1903 in 38Auto, which works just fine... but I only shoot lead or coper plated lead because of the softer steel used in old gun barrels... no point in wearing an old barrel... if the barrel is harder than I think, no harm is done.
