I'll add a comment at the risk of being banned by one of my fellow moderators.
Fifty years ago, I was a young soldier sent by my country to a small Asian country (South Vietnam) in an on-going effort oppose Communist aggression by a neighbouring, equally small country (North Vietnam) that was being supported by the Soviets, the Warsaw Pact and Mao's Peoples Republic of China (AKA Communist China). One aspect of that conflict was that the aggressor's forces (regular and Irregular) would assassinate teachers, hamlet and tribal chiefs, rob communities of food, and enslave men, women and even children to use as beasts of burden to transport war materials from the north. Two of the lessons I learned then was; a, that an unarmed populace is at the mercy of their government or ruler; and b, socialism and communism is a slavery in which you exist solely at the will and for the good of the state. Not too many years later, those very points were violently underlined by Pol Pot in the killing fields of Cambodia.

abninftr, LOL! None of us have ever said that we couldn't discuss such subjects on this forum! Chuck came up with one principle, "don't be a jerk"!, i.e. no hate talk, no flaming and so forth. Your observations are very cogent abninftr. We have also have seen dramatic changes to the above mentioned countries since the conclusion of the Vietnam War suggesting that socialism doesn't work. I hope some folks here will join the conversation.... Chris

abninftr, No reason not to discuss such subjects... the only limitation is that we do it in a civil manner... and I now am pretty sure our members here will do that...
With respect to regret, I think it is safe to say not only does Columbia regret gun control, but so does Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada and most other places that have it. California does too...

What ASTOUNDS me is the number of people in the USA who want, or are OK with socialism. I don't know where there heads are - but they aren't being observant. They either didn't have Civics in school or slept through it.

I suspect that those who choose or accept Socialism as a form of government really have no appreciation of its inherent evil.
First of all, it is based upon an erroneous premise that individuals - even the most charitable and benevolent amongst us - would really not want, and willing choose, to have the best life they possibly can have and choose to live a mediocre life so that others can have an equally mediocre life. Decades of socialism in Eastern Europe and Asia have, by the existence of corrupt, self-serving government officials and ubiquitous black markets are evidence that we all want the best we can have.
With that, they falsely believe that the society serves the needs of the individual. The truth is that with socialism, the individual exists solely as a servant of the will and needs of the society. Once the individual is no longer a contributor to the society, he or she becomes a 'consumer', and a burden a burden to the society. An extension of that is the increasing support of euthanasia and eugenics in socialist societies -- even in Western Europe.
The good news is that there are people like Ms. Candace Owens who understand this and are trying to awaken people to the truth.

Yep Craig, That's just plain downright scary! What's worst is that they don't see the redistribution of wealth and "free stuff" that no one wants (their property) or who is going to pay for it (their taxes)? The problem is that they see firearms as "evil instruments" and don't care if they go away from private ownership tomorrow. What ASTOUNDS me is the number of people in the USA who want, or are OK with socialism. I don't know where there heads are - but they aren't being observant. They either didn't have Civics in school or slept through it. What's even worse is that socialists never go back and take a look at history and the failure of socialism in its pure form around the world. Chris
