From time to time I go looking for old guns that interest me.... this week I found one I like a lot...A couple of days ago a friend and I went 'gun shop hopping' and I got lucky (or perhaps unlucky considering the price... ) With some 'dickering" I was able to acquire another 100+ year old 1911 (105 to be exact.) It appears the old girl has had a lot of use over the years. I thought I'd share the "before" photos... I'm thinking this gun needs to be restored to as new condition... Built in 1913, this old 1911 has almost no finish left, but little rust... which should not be hard to fix. While little finish is left, the metal appears to be well 'seasoned' and a good candidate for restoration. I was particularly taken with the serial number of the gun #C-4000!! Unusual and sort of cool. Naturally, the gun has the old style flat smooth main spring housing and the wide spur hammer as originally intended for mounted use. The grip safely has the short tang as is usual for 1911s. The rampant Colt's pony is the small one as used on the first 1911s and located at the left rear of the slide behind the finger serrations. For being 105 years old the grips are in surprisingly good shape, though the varnish on them has darkened over the years... I suspect the wood was spectacular when new... Finally, the ejection port as you would expect is the old style as well... All in all I'm pleased to get another 'veteran' 1911... not many are left... it should come back looking something like this... If it will come back this good I'll be really happy. V/r Chuck

I share your affection for old Colts (although I haven't started collecting any). It will be interesting to follow your progress with this one. Cheers.

Chuck,
That looks like a dandy old warhorse!! I love these old Colt 1911s. I bought my 1914 Colt 1911 from a WWl veteran back in the early/mid 1950s for $20.00!! It looked a lot like yours. Sounds cheap, but it was a lot of money for a snot nosed kid to come up with. I still have it, and am glad I never decided to trade/sell it.
You 1913 should be a great restoration project, and will be a choice piece once finished. Though it has been used, it doesn't appears to have been abused. Does it have the correct mag with it?? I am green with envy!!

How about another Colt 1911 from 1913...? This one is a Government issue model.
The engraving was done by Master Engraver Floyd E. Warren in 1985 - incredible artwork by an incredibly gifted artist.
This 1911 pistol was 72 years old and in excellent shape inside out when Floyd Warren started work on it...
All I need now is to find a Hi Power like this 1911...

Hello Chuck,
That is one hell of a Gem! I am very happy for you. Should you decide to take the plunge and get her restored, who are you going to commission to do the work? Ford's or Douglas Turnbull?
Thank you for sharing that one with us and congratulations!

^^Not that I mind throwing money at a gun project, but that's going to get pricey, no?

My last 1911 acquired is a 1917 made Colt that appears all matching! Went overseas in 1917 and over the past 100 years has been worked hard. I put a set of modern grips on her but kept the original very worn set, barrel I bore looks like a very rough roadway and everything rattles but she still shoots great And in my opinion to restore the pistol would be paramount to toppling a statue of Gen Lee in Georgia.
