Hello,
I was just curious after watching Howard's really neat video and comments under his "Llama Super Max-1" thread where he mentions using Mobil One Synthetic to lubricate his new 1911. So, here's the question... What do you use to lubricate your firearms? Grease, oil? Do you have any preferred products?

I have been using Break-Free CLP since the early '80s. So far, I have never had rust or a lubrication-related failure. It's boring, but sometimes I like boring.

Hello MC, When my son came home from basic at Parris Island USMC recruit training. I helped wash his "Cammies" and he had a small and maybe 2 oz. bottle in his blouse pocket... I've used CLP for years before that. I have been using Break-Free CLP since the early '80s. So far, I have never had rust or a lubrication-related failure. It's boring, but sometimes I like boring. I figured if it was good enough for the USMC, than it was good enough for me! Chris

A bottle of SLIP 2000 lives in my range bag, and another small bottle of the same lives in my pre-packed travel kit. It cleans and lubes.
Then there is also a spray can of Break Free that I keep and use for those times when I need to clean and lube a firearm quickly (spray, brush, wipe, spray, and wipe) - or I'm just being lazy.

I have used TW25b grease on my handguns for a number of years now. For the hard to get to spots, there I use a good quality gun oil in a needle oiler. I feel that there are a multitude of products out there that will do an excellent job.....the trick it to use them.

I spend a lot of time around, on, or in the water and have had bad luck with anything aerosol and a few of the popular brands.
I have had good luck with Ballistol and TriFlow. I keep a ballistol soaked rag in my kit and wipe down before and after use. I use an oil pen to put it on the slide rails, leading edge of the breach, etc.. I put a tiny amount of tri flow on the sear/hammer/trigger linkage.
Not ideal for long term storage, but for regular use in inclement conditions, it has worked for me.

I use EEZOX for lube and wiping the outside and Tetra grease on the slide rails.

I have used lots of different lubes over the years... everything from motor oil to various 'designer' brands of gun lube... all seemed to work just fine...
The Army used to issue (and may still )issue gun oil in quart cans... from the color I'd say it was some type of motor oil... It must have been pretty cheap, but it worked well.
That said I have recently been using Lucas gun oil but also surplus military oil and grease... again it works just fine...
Bottom line is this... if I ever have to buy more oil, I think it would be Mobil 1 or similar product... a quart costs just a few dollars and will last most people the best part of a lifetime.
Main thing in lubrication is 'do it!' Grease on bearing parts and oil on the rest. (BTW I grease Glocks too.)
FWIW

Most of the "Anderol" gun oil made under army contract was made at the Lehigh Chemical (later Tenneco) plant in Worton MD. It was an expensive high grade synthetic. Synthetic oils and greases were the main product from that plant.

Hello,
I generally use Wilson Combats "ultimate lube" grease on my semi-auto slide rails and then CLP everywhere else. I just picked up and applied the Lucas Extreme Duty needle oiler and refill bottle (1 oz. in the oiler and 4 oz. refill) and I am somewhat impressed so far with the Lucas product. It should last a very, very long time for me. I was at the local auto parts (NAPA) store the other day and should have seen if they had any Mobile One Synthetic motor oil, but was there to pick up a battery for my son's car.

Hello gt40doc,
No sir and not locally. I ordered it from Amazon.com online. The Lucas "Extreme Duty" gun oil has a reputation for staying where you apply it and it appears to be "heavier" than other lubricants that I have used in the past.

Chris The Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oil was designed as a high-temperature machine gun oil that doesn't start to smoke or deterorate in heavy heat applications. In the four years I have used it, it has proven to be an outstanding general purpose gun lubricant in all types of firearms. My friends and I conducted some pretty extensive user tests with it in hot weather and at -10 degrees in AR 15's and in auto pistols, and it performed well in all applications. Other friends used it to smooth up rough bolt action vintage military rifles and it worked very well there too. It was marketed for a while under the Spike's Tactical logo, but that doesn't look to be the case any more. It's a first rate lubricant that's worth it's price for sure. JayPee

I just now checked, and an O'Reilly Auto Parts store in my area carries this product. I will get a small bottle this weekend and give it a try. If I like it, then I will get a larger amount.
