Years ago the only times I needed to defend myself from muggers, I didn't have a firearm with me. Both times in parking lots, First time I ran off a mugger with the knife in enclosed photo, second time with "the Club" steering wheel lock. Now that I am retired, & live in a much safer area (& now have my CC license) I am most comfortable (& "comfortable" is of prime importance), carrying something small & easily concealed in a pocket, to repel an attacker. I know being attacked in the north Georgia mountains is very unlikely. I usually put a reliable but not precious, 9mm in a vehicle when traveling. When carrying on my person, most frequently a 9 x 18 Makarov in either my Russian Makarov - or improved polish P64, using the same round in the smaller pistol. In the summer heat wearing light clothing, I may carry my Iver Johnson TP-22 (40 grain 22lr HP). Most commonly, I'm out & about locally with only sharp eyes & friendly demeanor - to protect myself.

Interesting quote... VERY deep too... I think it requires some contemplation before comment... V/r Chuck Once more, I will point out that it isn't the size of the holes you drill, but where you drill the holes that counts. With that, I am still carrying the same BHP loaded with 124 gr 9 mm JHPs I was carrying when I first replied to this thread several months ago. Mate, I cannot visualize you carrying anything other than a 9mm Browning HP - well, I can visualize you with an L1A1 too...

Well, there is that --- a couple of L1A1s (extra for the son to use), a supply magazines and a case of 7.62 NATO set aside for any apocalypse that might come along.

To my mind the most important factors in the effectiveness of a round are shot placement and penetration.
That said like most generalities, it is only accurate in a general sense...
Whilst the discussion about 9 v. 45 will probably never end (in my mind both work and I carry both at different times) I in general agree bigger is better (and often carry a nine anyway.) I suppose the first question to be answered is can someone carrying a particular cartridge actually get good placement with that round...
As a footnote, I most often carry a 45acp; 9x19 or 357SIG (I like variety,... realizing variety in carry guns isn't a really good idea) I'm entirely happy with either of those rounds.
Still I have to admit (mostly as a lark) carrying a lot of odd-ball stuff just for the fun of it... I've carried a 9mm Steyr (a M1912 Steyr); a Webley-Scott 455 auto; a Webley-Forsburry 455; a Colt's 1905 45, Colt's 1908 380, Colt's 1903 32auto; a S&W N frame 44-40; various 44 Special S&Ws) S&W Schofield in 45 U.S.; a Mauser broom handle in 9x25 and a Astra 600 in 9x19. I don't recommend any of these for day to day carry except possibly the Colt's 1903 and 1908 if you happen to have one that you don't care if it gets all the bad stuff that happens when you carry a gun...for what these guns cost these days I wouldn't generally carry one.
The bottom line for me is I nearly always carry the .45auto (in some form or another) a 9x19; or a 357SIG (usually in the form of a S&W M&P or similar or in a BHP 40 I have fitted with a 357SIG barrel (which btw shoots extremely well and is wonderfully accurate, which of course is usual for a 357SIG round.) It is probably a function of getting old, but I guess the gun I carry most often is the Argie "Detective' HP... just because it balances so well in my hand... I like the S&W Shield too...
FWIW..

I hope its okay to "resurrect" an old(er) thread.
In order of preference, .45 ACP > .40 S&W > .357 Magnum >>> 9x19mm. 1.) My SA NM 1911A1 does EVERYTHING well, and is highly controllable, even with "defense" loads. My alloy-frame Rugger SR-1911 Commander-sized .45 is lighter, smaller, and only slightly more challenging to shoot well under pressure. 2.) If concealability is a major consideration, my Firestar in .40 S&W is the best match of power and "unobtrusiveness" I've ever found. It is only slightly larger and heavier than a Walther PP, but FAR more powerful. 3.) The 4" Ruger Police Service Six is for situations in which traversing barriers +/- deep penetration of aggressors is more important than rapid reload and high round capacity. 4.) If I am working among others who are armed with 9x19mm chambered pistols and ammunition/magazine compatibility is a major concern (and yes, sometimes, it matters), a Ruger SR-9, Cz75 compact, or FN P-35 goes with me. In situations #3 & 4, I'm usually not without a rifle or shotgun, also.
