I'd converted this "80 Series" (firing pin safety) 9mm to a "70 Series" some time back. The trigger on this gun was outstanding for a range gun- right at 2.75 lbs. and crisp. The pistol came with Novak (drift for windage) adjustable sights, which were bothersome for a "range gun" that saw an endless stream of different bullet weights and velocities. The necessity of loosening set screw and guestimating amount of windage adjustment with a drift punch wasn't ideal on this pistol. I am partial to the old BoMar type adjustable rear on a pistol like this. I sent the frame to Jim Milks and had him install a Caspian slide, Kart ramped barrel (the pistol originally had a non ramped barrel), serrated slide top and a few other "improvements". It shoots quite well with my range loads. Overall, it turned out pretty nice for the intended purpose.

That is certainly a nice looking pistol... now we need a range report... V/r Chuck

Me likey the looks of that 1911!! I own a few 1911s in 9mm, and I find the combo to be very pleasant at the range. I have reached the point where hard recoiling handguns are no longer fun shooters for me. Old "Arthur" has set up in my joints, and doesn't care for a lot of jarring. What used to hurt for an hour or so, now hurts for a day or so.....maybe longer.

Hello huntershooter,
Well, I must say that your Colt came out very, very nice looking. I like Caspian Products and did a full Caspian 1911 build back in the "day". I really like the two tone effect and it appears to be a very practical handgun...
Best,
Chris

Ran to the range this AM. Wind is brutal today, as it tends to be in early Summer in Kansas. I forgot any "clean" targets, so taped up an old one and dialed the 1991 in again after "tweaking" some things that required messing with the rear sight. Finally having it dialed in, it shot a heck of a lot better than I did. I'm uncertain if was wind, me being tired and rushing the shot- whatever, I tended to blow the groups with a single round. Running a 17# mainspring and 9# recoil spring the gun shoots soft as you'd expect from a wimp load shooting, full size, 1911. This will work for the intended purpose of "range gun"/"competition gun". Four rds. in 3/4" with a flier opening group to 1.5"+. It would be fun to see what the gun/ammo is truly capable of using a Ransom rest- or taking me out of the equation.

On occasion, I will get a good grouping going(for me), and then get that inevitable flyer that ruins it!! I am sure that it was either the gun or the ammo that caused it!!! LOL!! One can try as best we can to maintain the same sight picture and trigger squeeze for 5 rounds(I usually shoot 5 round groups), and still have that little bobble causing a flyer. So goes life!! I guess if we shot perfect every time, we would get bored and quit going to the range. There is no worry about me shooting perfect groups every time, but I still enjoy trying.

Me too GT, "it's the journey, not the destination".

Yes Sir Todd! You've got that straight! It's about the adventure and not the "destination". Me too GT, "it's the journey, not the destination". For years, I have searched for that "perfect" handgun and still I am left wanting... While I have dabbled in 1911's for years, I still keep searching. I actually did a Caspian build back in the mid 90's. However, that wasn't even enough for me. Now, if Wilson Combat and Ed Brown would stop sending me their nice and beautiful catalogs every year than I might just get satisfied with what I own at present... Best, Chris

Doc, there's a guy on one of those other forums who seems to be living your dream. Every time someone posts a 1911, this fellow posts up with two examples of his own. I believe the gentleman's name in "dakota."

I started acquiring handguns a looooog time ago. I used to consider myself a gun trader, but after thinking about that title, I decided that I am more of a handgun hoarder, as I have traded off very few handguns.....and sold even less!! Except for a couple of handguns, of the ones that I sold, I regretted selling them shortly after the sale, so I stopped that nonsense!! I never thought that I would reach my current state, but I am at a point where I have no burning desire/"must have" craving, for any of the new handguns. I know, that sounds sad, but it really isn't. I just shoot what I have 1-2/week, alternating a revolver one visit, and a semi the next. As a handloader, I can keep a good supply of range ammo available to take to the range, and the cost is very acceptable. Now, if I were to stumble upon a handgun that I didn't know I needed....but did, that is a whole different story.

I know what you mean about not really "WANTING" any particular gun at some point... Our safes are full... AGAIN... and we just added another last summer.... Of course I am mostly blessed by a wife who likes guns too and has quite a few (blessed except when she decides she likes one of my guns... ) My wife says when I am going through a safe and find guns I don't remember having that I have too many... but what are computer data bases for?
