This poster from FN at the Shot Show is making the rounds on various Hi Power forums. Looks interesting, textured grip straps, new rear slide serrations, ejection port is open across most of the top of the slide, new slide stop, and the front step down muzzled looks paneled? Thoughts? Tisas clone, EAA clone, SA-35, Longthore, and now FN to revisit. A lot of interest in the Hi Power.

Huh? That's interesting news, Todd. So Big Brother wants to get back into the game again. Quite a few updates that I'll the reader read for themselves then me trying to remember them all. 17rd magazine? I'm saying to myself do I have to purchase all new magazines to will a 20rd FN/Mec-Gar fit? To new, to many questions.... Thoughts? Wow....... where do I start.

Should be interesting to see how closely they follow the classic pattern, and how many parts interchange. They look nice, but I won't be in any big rush to get one. Eight originals keep me well-stoked.

Hello,
The name is very deceiving considering it isn't even true to the original design. But at least it isn't made from "plastic", so it should be a fine choice for those that's seeking a quality steel framed pistol - but yet doesn't mind getting a High Power in name only.
Even though it wouldn't be a Belgian Made FN High Power, they should have quietly shifted total production to FN America and seized the downtime as an opportunity to replace worn tooling and change back to a Forged-Steel Frame all while holding true to the design, excluding the magazine disconnect.
Just think what a Happy Day it would've been if FN announced they were re-introducing the 'Original' FN High Power Pistol.

So, where were these interested people when FN needed buyers to sustain production? This looks like an uglier gun to me. If they tamper with the original ergonomics, it will be hard to hold my interest. If they had simply come out with the original gun with an improved trigger, the Hi-Power could achieve the "Immortal" status of the 1911. It's the trigger that every serious shooter complains about.

Indeed!
This new pistol is a High Power like the High Power was entirely a JMB design. I may give it a shot down the line. Thankfully, we won't need to collect them for decades!
Cheers,

FN announced the re-introduction of the High Power at the Shot Show. Here is a link to a review of the new gun. High Power coverage is at about 31 min 28 seconds into the video. youtu.be/q-For19Eftg FN has improved the beaver tail, has modern cuts in the slide for sights and now offers 17 round capacity among other improvements... Take down is simpler using a more modern lever system. Finishes offered include Flat Earth, Black and Stainless. FN also is offering a variety of grips including several wood options. Price? Not cheap... starting prices around $1,200... Street price should be about where the price was when the HP was discontinued a few years ago. Take a look... the video in impressive.... I'm delighted the HP is back. BTW, at 35 min into the video, the Girsan's new HP products are reviewed as well... FWIW Chuck

I wish Stephen was here to give us his thoughts.
As for me, when the SA35 was announced I was all in and super excited to have a new range gun with all the fixes. I’ve had great experiences with a Springfield MilSpec 1911 and don’t understand all the Springfield hate- has everyone forgotten the S&W back stabbing? Then this FN drops yesterday. It is great FN is bringing back a High Power like pistol but it’s a mixed bag. All we needed were the changes the SA35 brought; there is a lot here that we didn’t need and some things missing too. Odd choices on FN’s part. I plan to buy an SA35 one day when they are generally available to keep my old Mk3 company, but the jury is out on the FN. (and I really hate that guide rod hole!)
Best.

Hello, TXRider,
I wish every day that Steve was still with us, and I can assure you that he'd say the gun in question is NOT a High Power. In fact, it's so NOT a High Power, that calling it that is just wrong!
This so-called High Power needs a name like HPINO, i.e., High Power in Name Only, like RINO means Republican in Name Only. They're Both Fakes!

I think it is a bit premature to condemn the the resurrected High Power...
Though I'm speculating here, I think this gun is a response to market demand, but I also think it has updates to make it more competitive in the commercial market.
I can't say if parts will interchange, but from looking at what I could see of the field stripped gun, I suspect most parts will interchange... it is still a steel gun (and forged frame once again.)
My 1912 vintage 1911 pistols are not identical to the new production guns... but the new guns are still essentially a 1911. It looks to me if the same thing could be said about this HP... and it fixes some of the long standing complaints about the original design... I sure hope they have ditched the magazine interlock.
The magazines look interchangeable with existing mags... if so I will definitely buy some 17 round mags...
Seems we need to wait and see what develops before being too critical...
Just my thoughts... FWIW

Post number 2 from me . I actually found this forum recently when I was looking for more from/about Stephen - wish I had found you sooner. Looking at the pictures of the New High Power the ambi safety looks exactly like the one on my Mk3. I saw confirmation on the FN website that the magazine disconnect has been removed - as it has on mine It would be great if the new mags worked in our old guns; the South Africans are going to wear out at some point and I don't know where to get replacement springs for them. I would so love to see a posting titled "A Critical Look at the new FN High Power" from our old friend...

I am not exactly sure what mags you are talking about but I suspect the South Africans are actually the Argentine mags that were on the market in the mid-late 1990s one version of which had extended capacity. Back then the Hillary mag ban was going on and mags over 10 rounds were expensive and scarce. Mine worked ok but did not last a long time... a few years maybe and they I started getting cracks from low quality metal used in them. As far as I know they have not been on the market in about 20 years or so... but there are lots of 15 round mec-gar mags around that work very reliably and are of high quality... they only cost a couple of bucks more than the 13 round version. Mec-Gar also made 20 round mags but they were discontinued a few years ago... they do still turn up on Gun Broker from time to time. Hope that helps... FWIW Chuck Post number 2 from me .
