Been lusting after an HP ever since I was a young teen in the early-mid 80's...but for some reason I've never bought one. Stopped by an LGS yesterday and found this new w/o box FEG. Guy said it was the store owner's gun that he never fired and stuck in a safe. It appears to have been gone over, though...the magazine disconnect is gone and it has a nice, smooth 3 lb. trigger, but the lack of wear on the frame rails, etc. leads me to believe it's unfired. I discovered it has the S&W barrel, which leads me to the question...I know the guide rod is different than the standard HP, but does it use the same recoil spring? Price paid was $399...hard for me to gauge since I haven't seen these around in @ 20 years, and the only recent FEG I've seen was a very well used example at another shop several months ago for the same price.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting the great images of your new FEG. It certainly looks like it was well cared for. Looks original with the exception of after-market Herrett grips. Not sure if you have looked around the FEG part of this forum, but Chuck, our administrator posted some great images of the differences on the two barrels. Check it out, link to the thread is highpowercollectors.proboards.com/thread/9/feg-barrel-typesJaypee, who wrote a short book on the FEG Hi Powers states in the thread "It should also be understood that FEG redesigned the frame, slide, and recoil spring guide at the time it redesigned the barrel, and that none of them are interchangeable with the Browning frame, slide, barrel, or recoil spring guide." You should also get Jaypee's book, Decoding the FEG Hi Power, it has some good info on the S&W operating system vs the Browning system. When you get to the range, let us know how it shoots. I decided to make it an "old school" day at the range today to break in the FEG... I hadn't planned on putting any money into this gun, just sticking it into the safe and enjoying it every now and then...but it's such a pleasure to shoot, I might have to send it off and have some work done and carry it. I can't imagine what it would shoot like with some actual sights and trigger work. Also, I'm wondering if the magazine that came with my gun is for .40 cal. The feed lips are much wider apart than any other 9mm magazine I have, with a little bit of effort you can pull the rounds out through the feed lips, and it has trouble feeding the initial round from the magazine as the round wants to tilt downward (it functioned 100% after the initial round each time). The magazine doesn't appear to be original to the gun...it has much more wear (pics show markings on mag). I've got a couple of Mec-Gars enroute.

Your note reminded me of this... back in the 10 round limit days, a 10 round .40 Kel-Tec P-11 magazine held 12 rounds of 9mm and worked just fine. It was a neat trick.
I just now took a look at a fairly new Mec-Gar BHP .40 magazine... the feed lips are so far apart it will not hold a 9mm round.
Cheers,
Tim
